Bell Mobility's latest bluetooth offering: Samsung SPH-a920

Back in August I wrote about Bell Mobility's first (and crippled) Bluetooth phone. This past week I picked up their latest phone with Bluetooth capabilities, the Samsung SPH-a920. I must say that I'm much happier with this phone so far. In particular the phone supports the OBEX profile for Object Exchange between two devices. I haven't done enough research about the software I can use to make use of this feature, but it's nice to know my phone has this support. Primarily I wanted to be able to send my pictures from the built in camera to my PC. Looks like the software in the phone will only allow me to send contacts. Calendar appointments and photos doesn't seem to have that option.

The good news for pictures is that this camera has a slot for a transflash memory card and they include a 32mb card to get you started (in addition to the 24mb internal memory) and a SD flash adapter so I can easily pop the chip out and pop it into the card reader of my computer. Problem solved.

In addition to being a 1.3 megapixel camera, there is also a camcorder mode for taking up to 30 second videos. When I get a chance I'll pop a few videos up on this blog.

Supporting a flash memory and video, you can imagine this phone probably plays mp3's too. I'm not a fan of flip phones, but the outer face has a separate display and a few buttons for navigating through your play list. The package also includes stereo headphones with a microphone. A nice touch.

Speaking of nice touches, I was pleasantly surprised to find they also include a USB data cable in the box. The unfortunate part of that cable is that it can't be used for charging the phone too. I'll have to look at 3rd party options like ziplinq for that.

In addition to OBEX, Audio Gateway and Dial Up Networking profiles are also supported. Which brings me to the next feature which is support for the EV-DO network. I haven't connected yet, but will be trying this in the next few days to see what the speeds and coverage are like. I generally have a week CDMA and 1X signal in my house, but surprisingly I can get an EV-DO signal most of the time.

All in all, my out of box experience has been pretty high with this phone. Takes the sting out of being stuck on the CDMA network.

Update (Feb 17/06): The Bell specific user guide for the Samsung SPH-a920 can be found here: http://bell.userguides.ca/guides/interactive.aspx?tab=h&device=76. It's a nice interactive guide.

Pricing for Mobile Data through your phone is available here: http://www.businessonthego1.com/english/wp_datapricing_cards.asp. You should call 1.877.DATA.123 (1.877.328.2123) to sign up for a package.

My signal has been pretty low as well. And I have no idea how to transfer my contacts into the computer and also why can I only save 4 or 5 songs on to the media player is that all she's got. And video I have taken won't run on my brand new lap top. Any sugestions on where to go for software. Mine came without I think. Really neat phone though. Thanks.

Here's an update. I've been successful in sending contacts from my computer to the phone. Once you have established a bluetooth connection to the phone, in outlook, go to the contacts pane, select a contact (don't open it), and then from the File Menu, choose Send To Bluetooth, and choose your deviced in the cascaded menu.

As for Software, I haven't found anything from Bell Canada yet. I was able to install the drivers from Sprint. If you go to sprint.com/downloads, choose windows xp, and download the "Sprint PCS Connection Manager for Phone as Modem/USB Cables" it will install Samsung drivers. It will recognize the phone okay, but just to set expectations correctly, I've heard (rumours) that the USB cable only supports dial up network, not data synchronization or access to the flash file storage.

  • Barry Gervin January 16, 2006 3:46 PM

Following your path, after download driver from SPRINT/USA. I was able to connect the built-in modem on SPH-a920 and my laptop, I even connect hi-speed internet. It is awesome...But i am not sure if I am going to get charge from BELL MOBILITY (Montreal, Quebec, Canada). Does anyone have any glue??? Thanks

  • Barry Gervin January 18, 2006 9:16 AM

I was wondering if it was possible to transfer mp3 music from a USB cable. I would also like to know, does the phone have vibrate options instead of silent...im in the process of getting this phone. I heard its a great phone too, so i just want to know. THANKS!

  • Barry Gervin January 18, 2006 11:46 AM

I just got the phone yesterday. Yea you can turn off sound, and just have vibrate on. I want to know too if i can transfer mp3's from my pc to the phone using the provided usb cord?

  • Barry Gervin January 19, 2006 12:42 AM

I too figured I'd just hook up the USB cable and XP would see the transflash as another drive, but no. All I get is found new hardware "Samsung CDMA Technologies". I can find any software at Samsungs for a SPH-a920, any ideas anyone. Terry

  • Barry Gervin January 19, 2006 11:27 AM

All the information that I've found on the USB support (on US/Sprint forums) is that it's only as a dial up networking cable. No other data transfer.

Fortunately, you can at least pull out the transflash and pop it into a card reader and get the data off/on that way.

  • Barry Gervin January 20, 2006 4:27 PM

I have this phone on Sprint, and have used the data connection over USB and BT, and have speed test results from 1 to 1.8 Mb/s from 2 different web tests. Unlike some other phones, including my old Sanyo 5600, you can't use the transflash over the usb like a regular flash drive. Inconvenient, since I don't have an SD slot in my laptop. I'm hoping BT might provide a way with file sync, but I haven't tried yet. Anyone know?

Transflash/microSD capacity lags miniSD (which lags SD), and is still weeks to months away from holding my collection of Star Wars movies in 3G2 format, as well as a few hours of the latest mp3's. 1GB has been announced, but I haven't found one for sale yet, while 2GB is now currently available for miniSD. Oh well.

I haven't transferred any video to my pc yet, but Quicktime plays most 3G formats, including the videos from my 5600. I'd be surprised if it doesn't play these.

  • Barry Gervin January 22, 2006 10:08 PM

I was wondering if the mp3 player can still be used after you end the bell service because having to conect to the internet all the time?

  • Barry Gervin January 22, 2006 11:24 PM

Don't see why the mp3 requires service. I have used the mp3 on a plane while in airplane mode (no radio).

  • Barry Gervin January 24, 2006 2:36 AM

    GREETINGS,

Just bought this phone and am wondering approximately how many MP3 music files will fit on the supplied 32 meg card? Anybody know how big the average MP3 file is???

  • Barry Gervin January 24, 2006 12:26 PM

Just purchased A920 and have not had any luck with a Bluetooth headset. Any suggestions?
I have tried Motorola H700 and volumn is not the greatest and alot of static. Even called tech support and tried another H700 incase of faulty. No luck. Also tried Sony Ericsson HBH-608, great reception and connection just the headset hurts my ear after 1.5 hours.. :-(

  • Barry Gervin January 25, 2006 3:32 PM

Just got the phone. Use the media icon on the menu screen to avaiod going through the stor to hear music - no connection required.

  • Barry Gervin January 26, 2006 2:29 PM

32mb card hold only around 5 songs in mp3 format.

Anyone know where to get new ringtones for free? How about having a t9 input in a language other than English?

I tansferred songs to the supplied card, however, the phone sees the card as full but it doesn't see the mp3s. Any solutions?

  • Barry Gervin January 26, 2006 4:41 PM

Make sure you put mp3's into the Media folder.

  • Barry Gervin January 29, 2006 4:54 PM

I got this phone about two days ago, so far i have figured out that if you put your mp3's into the file called media on the trans flash card the phone will see them and you will be able to access them from your media icon, now you will only be able to fit about 4 or 5 on there but if you download a audio file converter you will be able to convert all of your mps's to around 80kps and they still sound fine on the phone, at that quality i have been able to get about 15 soungs on the chip.

As for software for this phone i have not had much luck except for on samsungs website useing the globel download center, you can download pc link but for me it only says this model is not supported, even though the web site says its for the a920

now on www.download.com there if i mobile phone browser, BUT i cannot find a way to get it onto the phone, i can get it on the memory card but can not run it maybe somone else will have more luck

  • Barry Gervin January 30, 2006 9:16 AM

The phone's specs say the flashcard max expansion is 512MB. If a 1GB card comes out, will it work?

  • Barry Gervin January 30, 2006 4:48 PM

Lots of good discuss on this sneak SPH-A920 phone. I am wondering is there any way I could direct dial a contact from PDA? So we could turn a PDA to a smartphone?

  • Barry Gervin January 30, 2006 4:59 PM

I just got the phone 2 days ago and i was also wondering if you can transfer mp3s from the computer to the phone using the usb cord.samsung cdma

  • Barry Gervin January 30, 2006 7:28 PM

the only thing you can do right now with the usb cable is use your phone as a modem which isnt actually too bad but other then that your going to have to go out and get a transflash card reader there only around $20-$30 hopfully they will come out with something to fix this

  • Barry Gervin January 30, 2006 7:29 PM

how do you use the bluetooth? i always askes me for a pin number

  • Barry Gervin January 30, 2006 8:55 PM

anyone know if you can set your MP3's as your ring tones? If not, what formats are compatable for ringtones and what folder do I need to put them in on my transflash to be able to use them.

  • Barry Gervin January 31, 2006 2:37 AM

where do i get the drivers for this phone? went to the samsung global website, downloaded pclink 1.0, but i cannot get the connection to work. what am i doing wrong???

  • Barry Gervin January 31, 2006 4:35 AM

well i got the phone last week and i tried to transfer songs from another phone via bluetooth and i was told that telus and bell have a lock on that. is there any way that i can fix that?

  • Barry Gervin February 3, 2006 1:40 PM

you can set your mp3s as ringtones. first make a smaller version of the mp3 that is only about 15 - 20 secs long with the part that you want. (this should be about 100K with variable bit rate) Then goto funformobile .com and upload your ringer to your phone for free, you can also send pictures and games.

  • Barry Gervin February 3, 2006 11:26 PM

I was frustrated by A920 in the very beginning but I am much happier now.
To transfer songs from PC to my phone, I bought a SD card reader which costs about 25 or 30 dollars, then I can write songs onto the mini SD card from my computer easily. At this moment I only have the 32MB mini card so it holds about 5 songs, but I think the 512MB card will make this phone my absolute favorite! BTW, I personally think the audio quality of A920 is pretty nice when listening to songs.
To transfer pictures from the phone to PC, you will need to send the pic to Bell's online album, then you can do whatever you want to do with the pic.

  • Barry Gervin February 4, 2006 12:14 PM

Interesting question whether transflash above 512MB will work. The docs say not to go over 512, but if there's nothing that big yet, maybe they just state that limit because it hasn't been tested yet?

My sprint rep (orlando, fl) said you have to pay for using phone as modem. It's $40 a month for unlimited modem use, including power vision. Power vision alone is $20, so you pay $20 extra for the data use. She said it extremely expensive to pay in chunks for the data use, so you should go with unlimited. I would like to know if I can get around being charged for the data use, I've never had to pay before. Has evdo changed this??

  • Barry Gervin February 4, 2006 5:45 PM

I was trying to find a driver for my A920 hooked to the USB cord to my computer. Went to CDMA site and downloaded the 940 driver... crashed my entire comp. wouldnt start... Unless someone knows a way to use your phone to transfer mp3s from your computer... DO not , under any circumstances.. try to transfer songs directly to your phone. THe usb cable is meant for modem purposes.
Mp3s need to be transfered on to an SD reader via computer. then take out SD chip and put it in your phone.

  • Barry Gervin February 4, 2006 8:35 PM

How do I download only the name and first business tel number from Outlook instaed of the entire vCard?

  • Barry Gervin February 4, 2006 9:44 PM

you can copy any of your pictures and videos to you memory card and then move them onto your computer, you dont need to send then via bells online album

  • Barry Gervin February 5, 2006 2:26 AM

"To transfer songs from PC to my phone, I bought a SD card reader which costs about 25 or 30 dollars, then I can write songs onto the mini SD card from my computer easily."

I thought it was just me, but apparently alot of ppl are having the same problem.
Mine is i put the 32mb flash card into the celly, then i hooked up the usb wire bell gave me into my phone then into the pc usb port...
then my pc recognizes the connection as "Samsung CDMA technologies." it says it needs to install software from a cd, or sumwhere on the pc. It's searching, it ends up finding nothing. So i went to the Samsung website, and installed the software for the SPH-a920, its a .zip file, it ends up not working....I AM SO F'N PISSED...! I'M STILL NOT ABLE TO WORK THE MP3 PLAYER..! after i have had it for more than 1 month. In my package when i got the phone i have the mini flash card that actually fits into the card, then there is this bigger "TRANSFLASH chip." So in my mind i think i should not usethe usb wire.. its a bs wire.. do i take the bigger trans flash card, and plug into my computer? (but where do i plug it in, theres nothing on my pc's hard drive to fit it. the flash chip fits into the transh flash card, is the trans flash the SD reader thing ur tlking about?
im so confused....can some one PLZzzzzzzzzz ! help me..
i specifically bought this phone because i couldnt afford a ipod, and i wanted a mp3 player, now im stuk with this great phone, but defective mp3 player...but i kno theres a way to make it work, i just dont know how :(

hey ppl.. i have this same problem with my phone.. i bought it a week ago.. i thought i could transfer data to and fro my pc to mobile using usb data cable.. but no.. thats now working.. and now i figured out that it is only of modem purposes..thats stupid ... highly user unfriendly.. anyways..and about the flash card i have got.. i dont have any slot in my laptop to put data into that card...how do i listen to songs now..i even clicked so many pictures to send it to my friends.. and now i cant send them cause i cant transfer them to my pc...
Is there any way i can transfer my pictures to pc so that i sent it.. and how do i listen to music..
how do i use flash card if i dont have the slot... its really frustrating..

  • Barry Gervin February 6, 2006 6:05 PM

that cable is only for modem.. i cant believe this.. ok than how will i transfer my music and photos...i dont have flash card slot in my pc... how do i use the flash card provided to me in the package...

  • Barry Gervin February 6, 2006 7:56 PM

We all need to keep calling BELL support and complain....Ask them to add USB support and full OBEX file transfer support.

If we all do it, they could release a new software to remove the lock key.

  • Barry Gervin February 6, 2006 10:17 PM

to transfer pics and music. The phone comes with a 32mb transflash sandisk card. It also comes with a transflash adapater. To add data to this card from your PC,you will need to buy an SD card reader. They run about $20 and it hooks up to your PC via USB cable. You put the memory card in the adapter and then the adapter into the SD card reader and hook the adapter up to your PC. Once everything is hooked up to your PC, you will be able to move files into the folders on this drive.

I want to know how to create ringtones from your MP3's?????? All the software I use, ringtonechopshop.com, funformobile.com only partially work. For some reason, the Samsung A920 does not let you download the file and gives you an error message. They want you to pay for everything. Any ideas?????

  • Barry Gervin February 7, 2006 5:02 PM

I've talked to Bell.ca, Samsung.ca and... no go. Samsung told me not to install pclink v1 from their global site because it is not suppored on the Canadian SPH-a920. Bell told me that they have no plans to release any drivers or software for anything else but modem use, trying to sell their internet data plan. Finally someone from bell data support told me to go to <http://www.futuredial.com/canada/bell/snapsync/PhoneCableList.htm>, check which phones are supported, return my a920 and request one of the listed ones. In order to sync contacts (or anything else, if possible) I'd need to purchase FutureDial's SnapSync™ Software rebranded by Bell as "Data on the go". I can't belive it! Nothing is available today, if it ever becomes available, the bottom like will be close to a Treo650! I guess, if I don't find any meaningful alternatives in 3 days, I'll have to send the phone back. Anyone knows how to at least transfer my 200+ contacts onto the a920?

  • Barry Gervin February 10, 2006 1:46 PM

    Hi

I have a plan with an unlimited internet mobile with bell mobility. This means, I can connect any time to the internet on my phone.

The question : Any one knows if I use the phone as modem for my laptop to go on internet, do I have to pay extras costs to bell. I called the costumers services but they din't answer the question clearly.

    Thanks

  • Barry Gervin February 11, 2006 1:19 PM

Not able to transfer contact info to and from phone to pc these days is an outrage !!!!
But other than that phone is great.

  • Barry Gervin February 11, 2006 11:43 PM

hey i work for bell the a920 is the best pone i've ever seen so far i have had minor problems just with getting the mp3's on the phone but once you got it it's no problem the only way to get the mp3 from your laptop to your cell is with a sd card reader go to view files when your pc finds it
then open another window with all your mp3 files and drap and drop into the media file.
ona 32mb card you will be able to fit 5 to 6 songs dependent on the lenght of the song.
if your curiouse sbout the bluetooth functions go to the bluetooth web site and find glossary and it will explain all the abbreviations under info.
takes great pictures two ways to get the pics to your pc one save the photo's to the memory card the put the card in the sd slot (no problem)
the other way is to connect the usb cable to a picbridge printer and print them off (sweet hun)
    great phone
ohh ya if your going to be using the usb cable to give your pc internet access it does cost extra and no it doesn't matter if you have unlimited mobile browser that's just for the phone itself
    there are 4 costs 25 40 60 100
any other questions about data plans check out www.bell.ca go to wireless- rate plans -data
    enjoy

  • Barry Gervin February 12, 2006 2:08 AM

To get MP3s working on the A920.
    - Preferably, get a 512 mb micro card and a flash reader. I found a card on ebay for under $40[U.S.], and a reader for under $5 [including shipping.
Don't pay $20/30 for these readers. You can go to CompUSA or most any electronic store and get them for $10 tops. Heres where I got mine
    http://tinyurl.com/ds3cv
The supplied 32 mb is obviously a joke, and should not be taken seriously unless you are content with 5 or 6 songs.
Again, heres where I got mine for under $40
    http://tinyurl.com/ahmjj
Put the card in the phone. Go to menu, media player. You will be presented with options, choose memory card. You will be asked if you want you create a media folder, say yes. After that, hit end to get out of media player, then take out the card.
Put the mini card into the adapter. Put the adapter containing the mini card into the transflash reader. Plug this into a USB port - It is now recognized as a drive, and you can proceed to load it up with music and/or video files. When done, put the micro card back in the phone, go to media player again, choose memory card and valah .. Theres the files ready to play. I packed around 60 songs plus 7 Guns N Roses videos on mine.
If anyones a GNR fan, let me know and I'll tell you how to get them on your phone.

  • Barry Gervin February 13, 2006 9:29 AM

What about creating ringtones from MP3's, or any other way to create ringtones without having to download them from sprint. The programs at ringtonechopshop.com and funformobile.com have not been working for this phone

  • Barry Gervin February 14, 2006 6:07 PM

    Check this http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75513
for info on creating your own ringtones.

  • Barry Gervin February 14, 2006 8:09 PM

well, am now very much clear about how to transfer music to and fro...
can anybody tell me how do i transfer the pictures i took with my cellphone camera to my laptop ?????? can that be done with the memory card.. wht is the medium to transfer those pictures... and the cell phone camera does not have zoom in feature right?? or it has???

  • Barry Gervin February 14, 2006 8:27 PM

how long the cell phone battery lasts if we keep listening to songs for longer durations?? how often we need to recharge if we continuously use it for listening music??

  • Barry Gervin February 14, 2006 10:31 PM

To transfer pics, choose the pic then choose options then copy/move it to the flash card.
From there you will have to take out the flash card, put it in a flash reader, plug it via USB into the computer, and transfer them.
Would be nice if there was an easier was, but there isn't.
Only other option would be to upload/mail the pics, which costs $$.

  • Barry Gervin February 15, 2006 5:45 PM

Thanks Jesse for all the information

Concerning the 512mb transflash, I was waiting to buy it from a canadian seller because the last time I buy a item from a USA seller, I have to pay extra costs to UPS for brooker fees.
Is it the same with the card you buy. Did you pay any extra cost for your card excluding the shipping.

Also, I try to play some videos on my 32mb card but it do not reconize the file. Do I have to convert the file to a special format.

    Thanks in advance and Cheers

  • Barry Gervin February 15, 2006 6:26 PM

    One more

I save the videos captured with my phone on my PC, But I can't play them on my PC. The format is not supported. Is there any way to play them on my PC.

    Thanks

i have been tryning desperatly to get ringtones on my phone but to no avail. ive tried uploading them to sites and evrything but nothing works. can someone please tell me how to set ringtones on my computer to my phone?

  • Barry Gervin February 15, 2006 9:48 PM

howcome all these things are not mentioned in the instructional manual.. they have left for us to figure out everything... are they playing games with us or they are still testing users?? this is really bad... well, this place is cool... everything is quite clear now.. thanks ppl... except for few things which i think sm ppl will figure out after several trials and errors... didnt designers think of these things while designing... or they just trying to bluff ppl to sell their mobile phone???

  • Barry Gervin February 15, 2006 11:21 PM

may be you can install real player to see the vedios or install the latest media player. i think it should work then.

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 9:33 AM

I can view the videos with Quick Time.

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 11:00 AM

Quit trying to put ring tones on your phone. Bell has locked this feature out. They want you to use their service for ringtones and charge you. If it's a custom ringtone you have created, there is a service from Bell that will allow you to upload your ringtone then download it to your phone for a fee. I just purchased a A920. Nice phone... don't like the fact I can't sync my contacts with my Lotus Notes address book. Nokia with it's infrared port did this so slick.

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 7:07 PM

    VIDEOS FROM CELL TO PC
If you want to play the videos you recorded from your cellphone on your PC, you need to have the latest version of quicktime

    go to:http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

    VIDEOS FROM PC TO CELL
If you want to up load vidios from your PC to your phone, you need to convert your file in to a 3GPP2 format.
Download a 3GP converter program, do a search on google.
I find one but it's not a freeware, we have to pay for it. The program is : ImTOO 3GP

If any one find a free version, let us know

    CHEERS AND ENJOY

How did you get the vidoes to play on your phone? what format do they have to be? I tried last night and can only get MP3s to work

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 10:36 PM

also anyone trying to use the USB cable for MP3 transfers, it will NOT work the usb is for data to go (wireless internet only!) if you do want to use this you can get free software downloads from this link:

    http://www.businessonthego.ca/default.asp?path=/voyageur/

do NOT use it for this UNLESS you have a data plan on your account, the browser DOES NOT cover this data usage. Entirely different.

Also, you are NOT ABLE to use your MP3s as ringtones. At all. Sorry guys :(

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 10:36 PM

If you have usenet access, go to this group
hr.alt.cellular.gsm.binaries and you'll see the batch of GNR vids I posted. Just put em on the flash card like you do mp3's, and the phone will recognise them and play them.
Vids must be in 3gP format ... There is a program called 3GP Converter that will convert mpg to the proper format for these MM phones.
http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp - DL the zip file, and choose English as language, unless you happen to speak Jap. And it is freeware.

do NOT use it for this UNLESS you have a data plan on your account, the browser DOES NOT cover this data usage. Entirely different.

Also, you are NOT ABLE to use your MP3s as ringtones. At all. Sorry guys :(

CAN I TAKE PICTURE FROM MY COMPUTER TO MY CELL PHONE AND PLACE THE PICTURE FOR MY PRINCIPAL SCREEN

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 10:38 PM

Jesse, thank you SO MUCH! I really appreciate it. And sorry about the double post there everyone..oops! :(

  • Barry Gervin February 16, 2006 10:45 PM

Wow this forum is very confusing to keep track of things.
First, Robynne, you are right and wrong. You cant use mp3s on flash or in memeory as ring tones - But, you can convert any mp3 you want into a ring tone, then upload it via an uploading service, then dl it to your phone. I've done a number of them.

Andres - I am in the USA. The seller stated $19 for Canadian shipments. Don't know about any extra fees.
As for the video question, I hope the post above will answer it. I found a pretty nice free converter that does a fine job ... But you'll really be needing more than 32 mbs.

  • Barry Gervin February 17, 2006 1:43 AM

I dont know how to convert these files so it will play videos on my phone. please help :) Also Jesse how can i convert MP3s into a ring tone to download to my phone??? Is it free?

  • Barry Gervin February 17, 2006 2:15 AM

nevermind i got it :) Thanks again

Anyone know how to get java apps from your PC on to the phone?

  • Barry Gervin February 20, 2006 10:18 PM

Could I transfer datas from my pc to the phone over bluetooth using this adapter:

    http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=34

  • Barry Gervin February 20, 2006 10:24 PM

I bought a SD reader/writer. I can upload file from my phone to my PC. However, I have no clue what I am doing if I want to download files to my SD Card. I am having problem creating a folder on my Media Player. Can anyone help?

  • Barry Gervin February 21, 2006 12:09 AM

Well I just spent over $400 on this phone because they advertised it as a camera & MP3 player. The Bell rep even pointed out that I can transfer all my data with the included usb cable. So it seems I haven't spent enough money yet to be spoken to like as valued customer yet. Apparently I should not have asked bell all thoser questions you all have been asking. You know tyhe logical ones, It makes them get rude with you. So for all that $ I bought thye device so that I can purchase all their other services. Bell sucks.

  • Barry Gervin February 21, 2006 3:12 PM

Steve - Your questions I think have been answered here if you look around. If you stick a blank flash card in the phone and access it for content, it will prompt you to create the media folder, or you can do it yourself. To get files on your crad, simply use drag and drop.

Jay - I agree that sucks that direct data transfer is not an option. That said, its pretty easy to do with a reader, which can be gotten for under $10.
Why not take it back if you are unhappy with it ?

rockdamic - I really doubt it. Its my understanding that data transfer via bluetooth is simply not an option. Whether or not a software revision may make this so in the future, I don't know.

  • Barry Gervin February 21, 2006 7:40 PM

The only data transfer available through bluetooth is to send contacts too and from the phone. I do this from MS Outlook 2003 quite frequently and it is a pleasure to be able to quickly shoot all the info for a selected contact over. Wish it would know how to sync like a pocket pc/palm though.

You can also use dial up networking over bluetooth, which isn't really data transfer to the phone as much as through the phone.

  • Barry Gervin February 21, 2006 8:49 PM

    Jesse> Thanks for the answer!

Barry Gervin> You still need the usb bluetooth adapter to send the contacts to the phone, right ? What model are you using ?

The LED on the phone's cover now flashes green about every 5 sec whereas it never used to do that before. Would anyone know why ?

  • Barry Gervin February 22, 2006 1:20 AM

I just got this phone today, its currently charging, and im glad I ran into this page to read all these mixed reviews. Perhaps this phone wasnt the best purchase for me since I dont have a laptop or an sd card reader, damn you 3 year contract! Anyways, I like the look of it so far, I did notice that the speakers are pretty exposed, has anyone dropped it and broke the speakers off? This just seems like the first thing to mess up with time. Can anyone tell me what I should expect to malfunction first?

  • Barry Gervin February 22, 2006 10:21 AM

rockdamic: Yes, I'm using a bluetooth adapter, but not a USB on. My dell inspiron 600m has bluetooth built in. So if you don't have bluetooth on your laptop either internally or through an adapter then of course, it ain't going to work. For the record I'm using the Dell Bluetooth stack. The hardware is based on the Cambridge Silicon Radio (firmware 1266) and as for the SW, I'm using Bluetooth HCI/LMP 1.2 Revision 04F2. Not sure that helps but thought I'd throw it in for good measure.

  • Barry Gervin February 23, 2006 12:43 AM

i have a question, can u make ur mp3 into ringers

  • Barry Gervin February 23, 2006 2:49 AM

rock - menu/settings/display. #7 service light on/off should cure the blinking light if you don't want it. Pretty useless battery eater, plus it is damn bright in a dark room.

Daniel - Yes ! Look around that has been answered here 2/14/2006.

  • Barry Gervin February 24, 2006 1:26 AM

I was wondering how to connect the supplied usb cable to the cell phone. There seems to be no software supplied to connect it.

  • Barry Gervin February 25, 2006 5:21 AM

i gotta say this phone was falsely advertised. now dont get me wrong this is one of the best phones right now BUT what's the point of having an expensive phone like this if you can't even friggin use the bluetooth to transfer and receive mp3? I mean this has got to be one of the most ridiculous thing i've ever come across. Is it just me ? or are the drivers and softwares f@#K up ? i can't even use the mp3's i uplouded to the card. without uploading it to the internet first then downloading it later. WHY THE RESTRICTION? this goes out to bell. if you wanna make money MAKE CUSTOMERS HAPPY !!!!!!!

  • Barry Gervin February 25, 2006 9:20 PM

The sales person who sold me the phone set it for "Home Only" mode. However, everytime I shut the phone off, and turn it back on, it reverts back to "Automatic" mode, and puts the phone on Roaming. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, how can it be fixed?

  • Barry Gervin February 26, 2006 5:36 PM

Aron you can download software to use the usb cord for the phone from this website...

    http://www.businessonthego.ca/default.asp?path=/voyageur/

This cord is for using the phone as a modem though so if you are trying to use the phone for internet on your computer please please make sure you have data coverage on your rate plan. it is not browser it is actual data and it is EXPENSIVE.

  • Barry Gervin February 26, 2006 5:38 PM

    ROB...

There is no way to make is STAY on home only if you power the phone off and then on again. My only advice would be to try and keep it powered on at all times if possible...otherwise you will have to go in and change that setting each time.

  • Barry Gervin February 26, 2006 7:14 PM

    Robynne...

Thanks for the response. I'm just very nervous about this because I live in a border city to Michigan, so quite often people pick up the American towers. I actually spoke to the sales person this afternoon, and he said he did not know how to help, and that I would have to call customer service. I agree with you though. It's probably easiest just to leave it on.

  • Barry Gervin February 27, 2006 8:41 AM

    Rob,

Yeah it is easiest just to leave it on. I do! :) Also another tip, if the setting does get reset and you see the "R" for roaming on the screen you can dial *2355 then SEND and that re-registers you with the bell network. You'll hear "Your test call has been successful" and then you can place your call without dealing with the roaming charges.

  • Barry Gervin February 27, 2006 8:44 AM

Sorry that may have been a little unclear...I meant you would place the call to *2355 and hear the recording, then you can end that call and place another one. Hope that makes sense :)

  • Barry Gervin March 2, 2006 2:04 AM

    Hi guys...
I am planning on getting this phone pretty soon. I was wondering what the battery life is with the MP3 player and video options being utilised. In fact, the actual talk time would not be as important for me as i usually have quick conversations, but will definitely be using the MP3 player a lot more.

    Thanks

  • Barry Gervin March 4, 2006 10:07 AM

The a920 is feature rich, but not PC connectivity rich. So I will limit my points to that effect.

The below is from a PC perspective

    Mp3s only via card reader.
    Vcards via bluetooth

    PocketPC/Palm

    Vcards via bluetooth

I agree with the previous comment that Bell wants to capture this connectivity market. That's unfortunate.

  • Barry Gervin March 4, 2006 6:27 PM

where can i buy a bluetooth card,to conect my samsung phone A920 with my Dell XPS M170 laptop

  • Barry Gervin March 6, 2006 6:58 PM

    Frazier,

I do not know the life of the battery that comes with the phone as I bought mine with the extended battery already on it. I LOOOVE the extended life battery and had my phone not come with it I would have probably bought it anyways. I play games, use the MP3 player constantly and (of course) make phone calls, and it hasn't run out on me once. I have to fully charge it probably every 2-3 days but I'm bad and usually plug it in most nights.

    Hope this helps.

  • Barry Gervin March 6, 2006 11:45 PM

Heh... I was wondering what was the deal with the data cable is. Well it's just worthless piece of crap! And if you guys were right... the only thing you can use the bluetooth is to transfer your data? You can't transfer anything else? I've read every post... so as far as I know you can only transfer data? Really lame!

Anyways to help you guys out there that asking those obvious questions... try reading all the posts first before asking the question. The chances are it's already been asked and answered!

FIRST your computer needs a sd card reader whether built in or as an accessory. If you don't have that you're not going to be able to transfer jack from phone-computer or vice versa.

SECOND you need create folders on your transflash card that are properly named in order to get your mp3/video/picture to work properly on your phone.

for mp3's and vids you'll need to create a folder called "media" and drag and drop in that folder. Note that the vids need to converted to a certain format. Please check the above posts for that information and where to get the software.

for pictures just snap a picture with your phone. Note: make sure you set it save on your transflash card. It will automatically create a folder for those pics. Take the transflash card out and insert it the adapter and then into the computer. Explore the card and you'll find where the pix are saved. Once you find this folder it's just a matter drag and dropping what pix you want into that folder. Once you get the transflash card back into your phone you'll be able to use them as wallpapers. You can even use vids as your wallpaper, but it'll probably eat up you battery like crazy!

Well that's all I know for now. I've owned this phone for 2 months now... though I'm dissappointed in the short comings of transfering stuff back and forth between the phone and the pc I still love this phone. I like that fact you don't have to download wallpapers, but use the one on your computer and if you know to edit the picture's size they'll fit almost perfectly on your screen... whether in portrait or landscape mode. I love the fact that you can listen to your mp3's and know when a call is coming in and just press a button on your headset to answer it and hear the conversation clearly in both ears instead of one ear listening and covering the other ear to hear properly! I can't wait to convert some vids and see how it works on it! I also like the fact that you can put the phone on silent or one beep and not have it vibrate like mad as I have my phone on me all the time at work. Plus it sucks up my battery while it's in vibrate mode. Anyways I'm quite happy with my phone. I can't wait to get my hands on a 512 memory card. Right now I have 2 256 cards and I basically use my 32 card for photos. Although I've other phones that seem very nice I'm very happy and content with this phone!! :)

  • Barry Gervin March 7, 2006 10:50 AM

I am about to return this phone because of the data transfer issues.

Someone here mentioned that you can transfer contacts to the phone via the card. What format shout I export from outlook as? where on the card should I save them? How do I find them with the phone? How do you do this? If I can solve this i may keep the phone even though I am pissed with bell for selling it before the software was available.

  • Barry Gervin March 7, 2006 11:54 AM

If anyone is interested, I have an extra 512 mb T-Flash card which I'm willing to sell. Email me, royal514 at hotmail dot com

  • Barry Gervin March 12, 2006 2:00 PM

But seriously whats the PIN for the bluetooth, Why would bell LOCK IT then put the feature there?

  • Barry Gervin March 12, 2006 3:50 PM

I just got the Samsung a920 on 03/11/06. I went to RadioShack and bought the Bluetooth adapter… It does not work for file transfers !crap crap! Bluetooth is only for the headset. I went to 3 Sprint stores for help and no HELP! I did figure out how the use the 512mb card. I am using Xilisoft 3GP Video Converter for video and the mp3 part is really ease. Just make sure you put them in the correct folders on the sd card. I put 2 hours of tv on my phone and about 20 mp3’s. This phone is really sweet. Except for the bluetooth !crap!

  • Barry Gervin March 13, 2006 6:05 PM

Adam> Try 0000, it worked for me

  • Barry Gervin March 13, 2006 10:03 PM

  • Barry Gervin March 17, 2006 4:08 PM

Is there a way to use this phone as a speakerphone? If a call comes in can i pres a button to talk handsfree? I read it was supposed to have speakerphone capablilites. If so how do i make it work? Can i engage the call without opening the lid for the speakerphone?

  • Barry Gervin March 17, 2006 5:23 PM

Theres a speakerphone button by the number keys, and theres no way to engage without opening the phone and pressing the button that I know of.
If you have it set to any key answer, then pressing the speaker key should answer the phone and engage the speaker phone.

  • Barry Gervin March 19, 2006 11:03 AM

I read the whole list of info and need an answer spelled out for me.
How do I transfer contacts in?
I realize I need to use the bluetooth but can somebody post the step by step to set it up?
I don'thave a bluetooth on my laptop but I can use my PDA from work until I get a bluetooth from home.

    Thanks

  • Barry Gervin March 19, 2006 2:04 PM

I just got the phone and trying to play with it. the main reason I bought this phone to use the date transfers (out lok , email etc.) but , reading the reviews here its impossible right now. But I heard thru grapewine that some third party companies are working on the software which will enable the feature. anyone aware of it? Lets hope for it.

  • Barry Gervin March 20, 2006 4:31 PM

    Hi,

igot the phone last week .. read through this list of news ... then this weekend I decided to tackle the phone and see what I could do.

I managed to create a video and transfer it to the flashcard .. insert to pc notebook .. voila .. download the latest Quicktime as mentioned above and .. I was watching the video on my computer .. thanks .. Also used the phone to create the media directory .. then copies a couple of mp3s from the pc .. it works ... so far so good ...

Now to see about the other items like Contact Transfer etc ... will keep everyone posted.

Question .. I am looking for a certain ringtone .. the ringer from the Satelite Phone on Jarassic Park III ... anyone have it or know where I can get it for this phone?

  • Barry Gervin March 20, 2006 5:21 PM

ok i have just bought a new phone and some of my friends that have cingular can transfer music through the bluetooth connection i was just wonderin if anyone new if i could and how to do it. I have bluetooth and all i just dont realy understand the concept.

  • Barry Gervin March 20, 2006 10:42 PM

Heather> If you look around, this topic has been discussed thoroughly. In essence, you will NOT be able to transfer music over bluetooth with this phone. Only contacts are allowed.

  • Barry Gervin March 20, 2006 10:52 PM

Ken> Here it is. Please note, I use a French O/S, menus may be different.

    1-open outlook 2003
    2-go to your contacts
3-double click on the contact you want to transfer
4-go File, then Export To Vcard File
    5-save to desktop (or wherever)
6-go to desktop, right click the contact Vcard file
7-go to Send To, then Bluetooth Device
8-make sure the phone appears in "Send To"
    9-click Next, and voilà

  • Barry Gervin March 21, 2006 1:48 AM

I was able to export outlook files, but slightly differently than above.
1-set up your pc and phone to recognize each other via Bluetooth. Make sure the phone is at the top screen level
2-go to contacts in outlook 03
3-single click on the contact you want to transfer
4-go File, then "save as" to desktop using Vcard as save file type
5-go to desktop, right click the contact.vcf file
7-go to Send To, then Bluetooth Device
8-a Bluetooth file transfer wizard will appear on the PC. If not done already search for the a920 and and then click next
9-you will need to accept the transfer on the a920. Note that if the z920 is not at the top level it will not accept the fle.

  • Barry Gervin March 21, 2006 1:51 PM

    Great thread all!

I have a question. I have some custom ringtones that I want to use on my a920.

What folder do I copy them into my SD card? I put them in the "Music" folder and the phone doesn't see them. Plus when I try to change my ringtone the only choice that I have is to go to "My Downloads" and when I do it says I have to download something first....

    What can I do?

  • Barry Gervin March 21, 2006 5:40 PM

    Hi guys,
    Tested and workign fine
i was able to sync mine with the pocket pc (PDA) and transfer all contacts in one shot. no complication at all

  • Barry Gervin March 21, 2006 9:53 PM

I have a video clip that works with windows media player from my computer. What format does it need to be in order for me to transfer it to my A920 in order to view it? Please can someone help me?

  • Barry Gervin March 21, 2006 11:02 PM

    Mike:
How did you sync it? More info please!

  • Barry Gervin March 22, 2006 7:29 PM

    Hi Guys,
Here is the steps. Enable the bloothooth in both PDA and the a920. ( Make sure your pDA recognizing and showing the Samsung A920 as new device) keep the units closer. go to contacts in the PDA and hi lite the contacts you want to transfer. Once you hi lited, press the stylus on hi lite and you will see a drop down menu with option to copy/cut/ delete and send via blutooth. use the send via blootooth. Once you send it. go to your a920 and accept the vcard transfer. thats all. i was able to transfer 140 contacts that included phone numbers and email address. i think the investment is well worth it. I am positive you can do the same thing with your audio or video clips. good luck
    Mike

  • Barry Gervin March 23, 2006 11:05 PM

I recommend Sennheiser mx500 ear buds with the motorola 2.5mm adapter. I did this because the lowest volume setting was too loud. The mx500's have volume control making the phone a joy, now!

Also, I listed to music for a 3 hour flight and still had enough battery power for the rest of the day.

  • Barry Gervin March 24, 2006 1:50 PM

I transferred all mine from my PDA like Mike stated and everything worked great.

  • Barry Gervin March 24, 2006 6:57 PM

    Hi Guys,
I am glad that most of you are able to transfer the contact lists transfered from your device to a920. According to Bell canada. The blue tooth is only for the headset. But Thanks to Samsung for leaving the transfer options wide open. I am wondering, once Bell finds out they would restrict this options in their next shipment!!!!!! First of all What does bell get by restricting this fucntion?? Why cant they provide the best customer service by allowing everyone to use the feature? I think they want to come out with the software and different cable to be able to use this feature. Too bad, we didnt need the extra cable and their software.

  • Barry Gervin March 24, 2006 10:17 PM

Steve - Look around, that has alreay been answered more than once here.

Mike - You cannot transfer audio/video files via bluetooth. Get a clue before posting false info, please.

  • Barry Gervin March 25, 2006 10:38 AM

    Jesse,
I don't think you need to be so arrogant with Steve and Mike. you said mike posted the false information here. His comment was "i was able to transfer 140 contacts that included phone numbers and email address. i think the investment is well worth it. I am positive you can do the same thing with your audio or video clips. good luck." He did not say that he tested the audio and video. But he was being possitve that this method might work. If it doesn't, then use the memory card to do audio and video. He is not here to show every one that he is a genius. i am sure he just want to help others and get helped by the others. thats all.
By the way, i purchased my phone in february and was struggling with it until mike put his way of doing the contact transfer. Thanks to Mike and others.

  • Barry Gervin March 26, 2006 10:05 AM

Roger - I'm not sure if trying to discourage false info is being arrogant, I'd say that is being realitic and genuinely helpful, as who really wants to go on a frustrating wild goose chase with no hope of sucess ?
Saying "I am positive" is quite a conslusive statement - And if he posts the method he uses to do this that works, I will noy only appologize but shine his shoes and mow his lawn for a month.
It simply cannot be done - And posting false info, even with good intentions, is certainly not being helpfull.
As for the other, I also don't think that was arrogant, but perhaps not accurate. I could swear I posted a link giving detailed instructions how to create movies for this phone, but dont see it anymore. Here is a simple guide how to create and put movies on this phone http://tinyurl.com/dmb85

  • Barry Gervin March 26, 2006 2:18 PM

I found a software that work with the USB cable. You can sync phone book to your contact in Outlook. The software have more possibility but for now our phone just support this one. Hope they will unluck more feature on the next update. Software call DataPilot and you need to have the lastest version in order to detect your phone. It work great by the way.

Here my email if you need the software.

  • Barry Gervin March 29, 2006 8:45 AM

Am I able to listen to my music through my blue tooth headset or do I need to use the headphones that came with the phone. And if I can use the blue tooth headset, how do you do it.

  • Barry Gervin March 30, 2006 12:15 AM

I can't say I've read every word of every post here but I have seen a lot of requests on how to "create" ring tones and get them to your phone. I've been doing exactly this using iTunes to crop my mp3's to ringtone size and using an upload service called rumkin. I'll paste the url to both upload to and the one you need to access from your phone and use the "jump code" to download to your phone. Hope some of you find it helpful:
Open up iTunes Version 6, Populate your playlist then select the song you want to convert to as a ringtune.

    One Time Settings:
    1. Go menu bar, click on Edit and select Preferences
    2. Click on the advance tab and click on the Importing sub tab
    3. Click on settings, then custom
    4. In the ACC Encoder option use these setting and click ok:
    - Stero Bitrate: 32, 40, or 48
    - Sample Rate: Auto
    - Chanel: Stereo

    Creating the Ringtone:
    1. Right click on the song
    2. Select get info
    3. Go to option tab and manually change the length of your ringtone. I suggest 25 to 35 seconds long from start to stop. Then click OK.
    4. Right click on the song again and select Convert Selection to AAC
    5. Once the conversion is done. Right click on the new converted AAC song and select Show Song File. That is where you new ACC ringtone is located.

Now us Rumkin or other uploader to upload your song and then download it to your cell phone.

For Rumkin (works great btw) Upload the file to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/ from your PC. Once the file has uploaded it will show a "Jump Code" Make note of the jump code #.
Then using your phone's Browser, go to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/jump.php on your phone. Input the jumpcode you got right after the file was uploaded. Download to phone.
Voila ! Ring Tones of your choice..

Also, FutureDial (I did see them mentioned in at least one post here) as of today (March 29th.) supports the Samsung A920 on Bell Mobility's SnapSync. This is part of Bell's Data to Go package and if it's the only means you have of backing up your contact list in my opinion is worth it.. It also comes with drivers for the phone so you can finally use that Data Cable :) The website is: http://www.futuredial.com/canada/bell/snapsync/Bell_SS.htm It's not GREAT software but it works and I will say this much. FutureDial's tech support is 2nd to none. If only Bell could take a lesson or two from these guy's..

    Mike..

  • Barry Gervin March 30, 2006 10:55 PM

Mike, do you have to contact bell for this software?

  • Barry Gervin March 31, 2006 2:04 AM

    THANKS MIKE !!

Ringtones with runkin.com works !!! on my bell mobilty cell

    Thanks AGAIN

    CHEERS !

  • Barry Gervin April 3, 2006 6:02 PM

    Mike

Are you sure about the compatibility on the SnapSync? On the web site it's still not in the ''supported phone''. My Bell mobility salesman did not know of that either. BTW i've transfert 300 contact from Outlook without a glitch via bluetooth... I'm just not able to send them all to another computer or phone... I've to send them out of my phone one by one, any clue?

    Thanks

    John

Just bought the phone but having trouble getting the mp3 working. i transfered two songs on to the flash card but cant get anymore on. i put them in the media file on the flashcard and all that but they dont show up when i try play them on the phone. is there a certain format they have to be in?

  • Barry Gervin April 4, 2006 6:51 PM

how can I make my mp3 music or part of a mp3 song into my ringtone? please somebody answer all i see is questions :(

  • Barry Gervin April 5, 2006 4:48 PM

Another way to create ringtones is to use a simple shareware program called MP3 Sound Cutter. Very simple, open the MP3 you want, start it playing, hit the start sample button, let it run 20 seconds or so, hit the end sample button, then save the selection to your computer. Then I use FunforMobile.com to upload the selection for free. It sends you a text message with the URL attached, go there, grab the download and presto. Works like a charm.
If the sound is too soft, I also use another freeware called MP3Gain and just adjust the volume and resave and resend.

  • Barry Gervin April 5, 2006 5:30 PM

the rumkin think works for mp3 ringtones. there are many programs for cropping the mp3s such as audacity , garage band, quicktime pro.

use itunes or other media player to convert your cropped mp3 back to mp3 (sometimes the other programs save it as wav). choose a reasonable bitrate i used 128.

upload to the rumkin site, posted a few posts ago. http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/

you can also use this site to upload .jar programs, many of which are available for download free on the net. i got some at www.midlet.org . (games and stuff)

i have an sph-a920 with bell mobility. many midlets and jar stuff works with this phone even if it doesn't say it does.

  • Barry Gervin April 5, 2006 11:47 PM

You can sync A920 contact with DataPilot.

    I have the 3.17 version.

Select US - A920... and it works... even if youre in Canada!

For the USB driver... enter h117 as cable number.

Sorry my English... I'm usualy speaking french!

  • Barry Gervin April 8, 2006 1:05 AM

    John,
Sorry for taking so long to respond to your post but yes I'm positive about the compatability of SnapSync now being supported on the A920. I had been in contact with Tech Support at Future Dial for well over a month and they kept promising to contact me when Bell Mobility finished their QA. I went to their site, downloaded the upgrade and drivers and it worked. I'm now using it on a regular basis so I know first hand it's working..

  • Barry Gervin April 9, 2006 1:52 PM

Hey guys thanks for all the help! I finally got videos from my compter onto my phone using the 3gp converter but when i watch the videos I can't fast foreward them or else it stops, and then i have to wait about 20 seconds until it starts again in the same spot that i started fast forewarding in. Is there a way to fix this at all and is anyone else having this problem?

    Thanks!

  • Barry Gervin April 9, 2006 5:13 PM

Well if you want to add MP3s to your TransFlash then you should use SD Card Reader. If you live in Scarborough ON, then you should visit Pacific Mall and Kennedy and Steeles. Go check out Canada Computers. They have the following SD Card Readers: http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=007113&cid=990.434

and they are selling a SanDisk 1G TransFlash memory for 99.99 I saw it in another store for 96.99 after I bought it but I can't remember the store name.

Just create a folder named Media on your TransFlash and dumb your MP3s into the folder. Put it back in your phone and away you go.

  • Barry Gervin April 11, 2006 11:44 AM

    Mike,

Regarding FutureDial / SnapSync. Does it only back up contacts or can it also transfer pictures & video from the Transflash card ?

Have been to their site and intended to download thier software - but it asks for my "serial #" where the heck do I find that ?

    Thanks

  • Barry Gervin April 12, 2006 8:34 AM

    Hi Guys ,

I am trying to transfer mp3 music from my laptop to my A920 phone , MY laptop is not recognizing it , I installed that voyageur software and still the same . Is their USB drivers specifically for this Phone ? Please let me know , thanks,

I am with Bell by the way

  • Barry Gervin April 13, 2006 11:58 AM

    Vick,

You don't even software or anything - the memory card that came with the phone, put it in the Transflash reader thing that also came with the phone - then put that into your computer - it should appear as a new hard disk drive in My Computer - just click into it and put all your mp3's into a folder titled "Media" - then just put the memory card into the phone

  • Barry Gervin April 14, 2006 3:44 PM

I didn't see it said, but I might have missed it. The 1 gig micro card works great! Bought one off of e-bay.

  • Barry Gervin April 15, 2006 11:12 PM

Saw where someone asked if the phone could take more than 512 MB. I bought a 1 GB Mini SD for the phone today ($80 at Best Buy) and a card reader ($20) and both are working fine. The phone reads the entire Gigabyte.

Also saw where someone mentioned having problems putting mp3's on the phone. You need to have your card in the phone first, and go to 'Media Player'. Your first time to access it, it will add a 'Media Player' folder. You just drag and drop your mp3's into that folder and Viola! The phone will also recognized sub-directories...i.e. if you want to put all of the songs by an artist into one folder.

Another cool feature (at least to me), is that I took pictures that I already have, and re-sized the image and transfered it to the phone. I'd recommend taking a pic with the phone first, so that the phone sets up the proper folders. Once you have put pictures onto the phone, you can apply them to anyone in your phone list. pretty neat.

  • Barry Gervin April 15, 2006 11:15 PM

And everyone always seems to ask about the data cable. It doesn't work for transfering information to and from the phone to cpu. It's to be used as a modem. Just go buy a flash memory card reader for $20; super easy to use.

  • Barry Gervin April 20, 2006 9:59 AM

    Hi Guys,
I copied some mp3 files from my computer to the SD card , i see it on it , But when i bring it to the Phone , Where Should I access these Files ?
I checked in media player , says folder is empty , meanwhile i added these MP3 files to the MEDIA folder.

    Any thoughts ?

  • Barry Gervin April 22, 2006 6:59 PM

    Hello,
myself, my wife and my sisteer all have this phone. my wife and my sister are experiencing the same problems with their phone. when they talk on the phone it constantly cuts out. You can barely understand the other person on the other line. also, you constantly think that the person is not on the phone any longer, so you're constantly saying hello to make sure they're still on the phone.

The signal is at full strength.

    Any help would be appreciated

  • Barry Gervin April 22, 2006 7:53 PM

Let's go back to this Secret Menu thing. I went there, and saw a security menu, YES or NO. What is this!!

    Any thoughts?

  • Barry Gervin April 23, 2006 1:46 PM

Questioin for you guys: Menu/Others/Location : "ON lets the network detect your geographic location using GPS making some features easier to use." Q: what features? "Turning location "OFF" disables GSP sut some features may still detect your where abouts using cell tower technology. Except for basic telephone and 911 services your location information will only be used with your consent"
I noticed this "location" feature is "ON" by default. As long as they don't publish it on the front page of The Star I don't really mind if Bell is aware of my location knowing that if I make a 911 call this'll make it much easier for whoever needs to come to detect where I am. But I was wondering: GPS only works on a "receiver" basis, in other words, any GPS device receives some data from several satelites and by processing that data detects it's location. There's no signal - as far as I'm aware - from the GPS device back to the satelites. I'm assuming this phone has some sort of GPS receiver in it that sends the coordinates back to Bell as part of this "location" option. As specifically indicated on the menu the user can manually turn this GPS receiver "off" - in which case the towers can probably triangulate your position anyway...
I was wondering if any of you know if there's any way of using the output from this GPS device for some "user usefull" purposes like: hiking, navigation, etc.
http://www.nhgps.com/ has some software that you can use with.... Motorola a920, between other things, Samsung A920 is not listed there. But apparently "our" phone uses the same Symbian UIQ "operating system".

Overall I'm happy with this phone, except the well known: almost useless USB cable.

Try to keep the phone as stable as you can when taking low light pictures, the camera has a quite good time/illumination response, disadvantage is that the longer it takes to process the image the blurrier your picture will be.

  • Barry Gervin April 24, 2006 8:03 PM

Does anyone know if one can stream music from the phone to a bluetooth headset or does it only work for voice/calls?

  • Barry Gervin April 24, 2006 11:07 PM

when I on the phone it constantly cuts out. You can barely understand the other person on the other line. also, you constantly think that the person is not on the phone any longer, so you're constantly saying hello to make sure they're still on the phone.

The signal is at full strength.

  • Barry Gervin April 26, 2006 7:31 PM

I have the same thing with the cutting out. I really only hear it with my bluetooth headset.

Hey can we address this secret menu. I am interested in that!!

    Thanks

  • Barry Gervin May 2, 2006 7:27 PM

I went to the bell store about my backround noise and they weren't very much help. I also called bell customer service and they weren't much help either.

I have found another person on the internet with the same problem as I'm having http://cnet.nytimes.com/Samsung_MM_A920_SPH_A920/4864-6454_7-31629390.html?ctype=msgid&messageSiteID=7&messageID=1752718&cval=1752718

Hope this can get solved, except for this issue, I think this phone is great.

    thanks,

  • Barry Gervin May 4, 2006 7:33 PM

Can anyone tell me if the data cable that comes with the a920 works with the Future Dial SnapSync software or do I need to buy a specific Future Dial cable?

  • Barry Gervin May 6, 2006 12:01 AM

Just got the phone today. I got the family plan and bought the A920 for my wife as well. So far I am very happy with the purchase. Things that the sales rep said were impossible to do, I have figured out such as moving pics to and fro and also MP3's. I especially love how the earphones have a mic built in and when you are listening to your MP3's or even just driving in car you can use the earphones and just talk right there. No need for bluetooth headset, the earphones have a mic built in. Lovin it.

With regards to how many songs you can put on the 32MB card. Most people answer about 5-6 songs, depending on length etc. Just wanted to say that what I did was encode my MP3's as 56k quality and it still sounds great and I was able to get around 20 songs on the 32MB card. I have a 512MB card too.. it is going to be fun filling that thing haha but I'll probably go with 128K bitrate.

To change the quality of the MP3 file, there are tons of software out there but I use RazorLame. Do a google for it, or use any other MP3 encoder.

MY QUESTION TODAY IS: How do I get that SnapSync software? I really really dont want to have to manually type in my contacts.

  • Barry Gervin May 9, 2006 8:31 PM

Well, this site has been the most assistance I've had in the 3 months I've owned this phone. I've been working on finding a solution to the problems with connecting to the PC all day between Bell Mobility customer service and Samsung. Don't bother calling Bell...you'll get transferred around and listen to more crap music than you can stand...only to get told you can't sync the phone with the USB cable...then they'll insult you and offer you a package for data transfer and tell you to get the Syncsoftware.

I'll give you the bad news first...like most of us we have different needs for this amazing phone which can do everything. I was in the market for an ipod and a palm, plus an upgrade to my cell and I don't have a digital camera so this model seemed like a steal at the introductory price of $99 instead of the regular retail of $399. Like the rest of you I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to use the phone's full capabilities with my desktop and laptop due to the lack of software and the driver. This phone has unfortunately been designed to the "requested Specs" of Bell Mobility from Samsung which is limiting our full use of the phone. You can purchase the SnapSync software online from guess who "a Bell Mobility Associate" for around $35 US...I think they had a new version listed today for $49....a $400 phone and they still want to suck us for more money.

I decided on the recommendation of someone above to purchase the Datapilot software which just released version 3.17 to accomodate this model. Right now it can only be used for transferring contacts, but it worked and that's all I cared about. $34 and you can download it directly. Install the driver first, then run the program. I'm sure as they upgrade this software all other features will be supported....eventually. The US software works fine for Canada contrary to their note on the website. The Canadian version does not support this model yet.

Good news....I'll save it for the last point...I spoke to a customer service rep from Samsung who was much friendlier and offered a wealth of information on this issue. So, here are the highlights:

    1) Bell specifically requested Samsung to manufacture this phone with limited connectivity so they could gouge us for more money uploading and downloading data and having to purchase their "data plan"

    2) Uploading songs from your computer to the 32mb disc provided allows for maybe 5 songs to be stored on your MP3 player; however, if you download your songs from the internet at $3.00/song the phone is designed to hold 500+....you do the math...another cash grab by Bell...and who's teenagers won't be doing this and racking up their bills?

    3) Bell has designed this phone to cost you money for everything you need to do...if you want to use this phone to it's potential they're making you pay for it!

    4) Don't download the PC Link software from the Global download centre for Samsung...it only works for some phones in the US. Our phone is designed to work as a modem with the USB so we're f---d!

    5) Finally the good news (for some)If you still have a chance to cancel your contract and take the phone back...Samsung has launched a model with all the capabilities of this phone with Roger's wireless the SGHT-609 AND AND AND they requested the phone to be manufactured to come with full software and drivers for complete downloading and use of all features with the phone when you get it!!!!
Easy file transfers, uploads and downloads minimizing if not eliminating all of the data transfer fees for most users!!!!

No wonder Bell is downsizing because they've lost money. There idea of customer service and satisfaction SUCKS!!!

So, I'll be checking tomorrow to see about returning this phone, switching my home phone and internet to Rogers and telling Bell to kiss my A--!!!!

As a business owner myself, this has been an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience...don't blame Samsung...this is all Bell's way to screw the customer.

    Good luck!

  • Barry Gervin May 14, 2006 3:20 AM

    Hi Folks,

Well, I've been using the phone for almost 3 months now. Bell still hasn't given me the $35 credit for the activation fee that was promoted. Other than that, I'm getting used to the phone, and I bought the SD card reader, and it works great. One thing I'm not sure about is the Zoom feature on the camera. The manual says how to zoom, and I try to do what it says, and it changes the image brightness, not the zoom feature. I've tried playing with the settings to shut off the brightness increase/decrease, and it doesn't work.

Does anyone have suggestions for zoom?

    - Rob

  • Barry Gervin May 16, 2006 3:41 PM

Does anyone else notice that the signal
drops off drastically inside ANY building,
and often just spends time searching for a signal
    (which kills the battery)???

I'm not impressed at all with the reception, and
Bell is no help at all....

  • Barry Gervin May 16, 2006 6:02 PM

On the contrary, I find the reception pretty good. In my house on my old phone, reception was crummy. The A920 I find to be much better. I'm not convinced this phone was the reason - could have been a bell tower adjustment, new tower, who knows? But reception - I find is as good or better than any other Bell Phone I've had. Perhaps your iternal antennae is clipped or disconnected? Try bringing your phone into a bell world and have them compare signal strengths with their other phones.

  • Barry Gervin May 16, 2006 7:32 PM

I also own an SPH-A920 Phone, when I bought it, i got a 1GB transflah card also, and yes it works. I also use my mp3 as ringtones, but I found out that they have to be transfered to the phone to be used as ringtones, stransge that you can transfer picture from the card to memory, but not mp3. So i found out a site to be able to transfer an mp3 to the phone.

    at http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/

using that tools I was able to use mp3 as ringtones, but if you want to do this, internal memory is limited, so compress your mp3, to lower quality, anyway it's a ring tone, not an mp3 to listen too.

Bluetooth is recognize by my laptop, but not much use for it, the only good use would have been the internet, but they charge by month not by usage wich would have been nice.

I'm now looking for a bluetooth stereo headset to listen to my mp3 and also use the phone has a headset. But somehow, I need my bluetooth to be compatible with A2DP and AVRCP to be able to use, the mp3 and micro/talk/control of the phone.

I cannot find anywhere if this phone has that capability, any idea? any one knows about bluetooth stereo headset?

And to answer the reception problems, no problems here, has i work with my phone, in a building at the 12th stage. My phone even works better at my camp, my old phone had to be in the window to receive a call or ring, this one, i'm inside sitting, and there is still a good signal.

    Pat

  • Barry Gervin May 17, 2006 6:06 PM

Its not funny thats how they make money. Basically the USB cable is for accessing internet as a modem. You can save pictures or video onto SD chip and vice versa. Bluetooth works for sending contacts but everything else is disabled. Anyone know this phone can be flashed to enable both the cable and bluetooth?

  • Barry Gervin May 17, 2006 7:18 PM

Don't forget, Bluetooth can also be used for dial-up networking/modem. If you have bluetooth on the computer/pda you want to dial out from, I see no reason for the cable at all.

  • Barry Gervin May 18, 2006 12:30 PM

Its because of this behavior by bell that people don't feel guilty about steeling satellite off them. Who are the thieves? It wouldn't be half as bad if they didn't scam you into buying the phone. Then you find out about all these limitations. Returning the phone is not the point, dishonesty is, direct or indirect. Besides, my time is valuable just as there's is. I don't feel sorry for bell when I hear of people ripping them off whenever they can. Pretty pathetic of bell that one has to come here to learn about the phone. Rant closed

BTW, not sure as I've not done it but there's plenty of places that unlock phones, I don't know if it would remove the limitations of this phone but who know's, there's a booth in Toronto at the eaton ctr.

  • Barry Gervin May 20, 2006 12:50 AM

    Hey ,
Does any one know if there is a night mode on teh camera?? I haven't been able to find one, and the camera takes really terrible pictres in the dark. But nightmode is a pretty standrad feature on most nokias and motorolas I have come accros yet. SO any ideas? THe flash isn't good enough, what i really want is longre exposure times.

  • Barry Gervin May 20, 2006 1:35 PM

With all due respect to efforts made before to arrive to definite conclusions on the USB data cable for A920: can we actually finalize it? The posts on this site as well as research on the others suggests there is no way to use the supplied USB cable for picture/music transfer or schedule synchronization; the only way to do it is by using an external card reader (which is OK for phone book creation or bulk media transfer but is not great for daily or even weekly schedule sync).

On the other hand, the post by Julie of 5/9/06 on this site and repeated mentions on others indicate there is some software that allows at least contact transfer (SnapSync by FutureDial and DataPilot by Susteen). I would assume if the drivers allow not just the use of the phone as a modem but contact info transfer, they should also allow (with proper software) the transfer of other data like schedule, pictures and music files. Did anyone try using FutureDial or DataPilot drivers with soft like Bitpim or QPST? If yes, what are the results - i.e., what does specifically Bitpim's Filesystem tree show?

    Several caveats:
    1. It's not clear from the posts whether SnapSync and Datapilot work with their own USB cables or with the one supplied by Samsung. If it's the former, no wander - when I look in the jack at the phone end of the Samsung USB cable I see about half of contacts removed, so SnapSync and Datapilot cables may be PHYSICALLY different from Samsung cable. In this case it cannot be used for anything but raking modem charges and should be locked away in the bottom drawer.
    2. If SnapSync or Datapilot drivers work with the Samsung-supplied cable, another caveat. I am a Sprint customer in the US. Could it be that cables shipped by Samsung to Canada are different from the ones shipped to the US? Unlikely, IMHO, but not impossible.

I would appreciate some answers that finally establish if there is a possibility to regularly sync A920 with PC without going through repeated removal and reinsertion of transflash chip from the phone.

  • Barry Gervin May 22, 2006 7:27 PM

I have downloaded several jpeg files to my phone's memory card, but only some of them can be viewed on the phone. it is a 1G card so there is lots of room.

the pics all have the same format and varying size and resolution. i cannot find any common theme to explain why i cannot see some wallpaper,

    any ideas please?

  • Barry Gervin May 30, 2006 3:23 PM

The USB cable is for INTERNET & CONTACTS ONLY! If you want to get pictures off the phone or songs onto the phone you must pop the microSD card out, plug it into the incuded adapter (or microSD-compatible reader) and access it using a separate computer. Copy mp3s to the media folder or the phone will not be able to play them.

  • Barry Gervin June 2, 2006 1:01 PM

u can use the usb cable to download songs to your phone...I have a friend that works a sprint and his does it all the time. I don't know how to do it. My friend says that it's really complicated. but u can use your usb cable to transfer songs to your phone.

  • Barry Gervin June 2, 2006 4:57 PM

Bluetooth: I'm still wondering about the secret menu thing too...any ideas anyone?
and i saw the post about unlocking the bluetooth with code 0000 - was wondering if your phone is with bell too or another provider?

  • Barry Gervin June 3, 2006 4:12 PM

Ok i just went out got the 512 flash card and got the reader.. i then converted some mp3s to acc and tried to transfer them onto the disk and it says there is a copy-write protection on the disk and cannot transfer!!! even songs that i ripped from the cd legally through itunes.. what the hell is going on.. i'm not impressed

  • Barry Gervin June 4, 2006 11:42 PM

This thing sucks. the USB is useless for transferring MP3's and photos, and the Data Link software is 10 years old. Friggin boat anchor compared to it's competition

  • Barry Gervin June 5, 2006 3:45 PM

A920 is a great little phone. bought a 3gp converter and after much hard work, namely ripping a dvd to my computer, then down to avi, then down to 3gp, can compress a dvd to around 70MB. 512MB card means I can have 5 dvds on my phone, and still have room for mp3's and what have you. shop around for a 3gp converter, i found AVonesoft or something like that works pretty well. be prepared to spend hours and hours til ya get it right, but when yer stuck on a plane for hours, it's awesome to watch stuff. *make sure you have fullscreen movies, the widescreen is just too damn small.

  • Barry Gervin June 5, 2006 4:31 PM

I purchased a 2.5 mm adaptor at radio Shack thinking I can use a regular set of headphones (same ones I use for my MP3 player) to listen to music instead of the buds that come with the A920, which drop off easily. When I did this , I only got sound out of one speaker. Do I need a special adaptor for this to work ? Or will it only work with the buds that come with the phone?

  • Barry Gervin June 5, 2006 4:38 PM

Someone mentioned that their phone came with an extended battery? Mine came with a standard battery. Is there in fact an extended battery for the A920 available and if so what does it cost $$CDN???

  • Barry Gervin June 6, 2006 11:02 AM

I'm trying to transfer videos from my PC to the A920 via the transflash card. I read somewhere that I need to first convert the videos to the 3GPP file format. is this the only format that is supported by the A920 ?
Has anyone tried other formats with success?

  • Barry Gervin June 7, 2006 10:06 PM

    >>and it says there is a copy-write protection on the disk and cannot transfer!!! <<

Make sure the "lock" slider on the transflash adapter isn't turned on.

    >>Do I need a special adaptor for this to work ? Or will it only work with the buds that come with the phone?<<

You need an adapter that has 4-conductor support (left/right/mic/ground), not just the normal walkman 3-conductor style (left/right/ground). This is easy to see as the tip of the wire (the part that plugs into the phone) has 4 parts to it. If you compare with a regular set of headphones you'll see what I mean.

    >>is this the only format that is supported by the A920 ?
Has anyone tried other formats with success?<<

I have tried many different formats and have only had success with 3g2 and m4v (might have been m4g).

    >>If yes, what are the results - i.e., what does specifically Bitpim's Filesystem tree show?<<

I have used bitpim and the supplied usb cable, and downloaded drivers I found on a website. I was able to look at the file structure of the phone. I was able to save my downloaded jar and jad files to my pc, which was my original idea for trying this. So by that logic, as long as a person has working usb drivers, transferring pictures, media, etc, should be possible both ways if bitpim adds full support for this phone.

  • Barry Gervin June 8, 2006 1:48 PM

John, Thanks for the info on the headphones but just so I understand what you are saying.. when you say I need a an adapter that has 4-conductor support do you mean that the headset itself needs to have this support on its jack oror just the adapter itself (i.e the adapter (male/female) that allows me to connect a larger jack to the smaller 2.5 mm cell phone jack ? If its just the adapter any idea who sells these ?

Also regarding the video format, Samsung told me that the phine supports MPEG4, 3GP and 3GP2 video formats with certain restrictions on maximum resolution and bit rates (which I can't rememeber). I've tried using ImTOO software to convert WMA and MP2 video formats to MP4 and 3GP2 etc and each time I do this, the video and the audio are out of sync when i play back the converted file. Anyone else have success with this ? Are there some settings that I need to change?

I want to thank everyone so much for the simplest directions on transferring mp3s and pictures to the a920... I just bought mine yesterday and spent all night trying to figure out why I could not get it to work with the usb cable and my pc... Finally after getting so pissed this morning I ran across this site and it made everything so clear... I specifically bought this phone for the usb cable connection to transfer mp3s and etc, by direction of my sprint representitive... However she had not bought hers yet so I think I will be making a trip back in to set the representatives straight on what it can and cannot do.. One question I do have is does someone have a recommendation on the size a photo that i transfer from my pc to my phone should be???

  • Barry Gervin June 13, 2006 8:17 AM

    Angelo:
It's just an adapter that converts the standard 3-conductor headphones down to the 4-conductor jack that the phone has. It's just a male-to-female adapter. However, I have not found one for sale in any local stores and I have a couple of store owners trying to locate one for me. Worst case, I may have to make my own.

I tried bluetooth the other day only to discover in fact that mp3's will NOT work with bluetooth. I love this phone but as the weeks go by I'm getting more and more disappointed with the amount of crippling it has. This of course is on Bell Canada network. I've not seen any other network versions of this phone.

I use Xilisoft 3GP Video Convertor to change my avi/mpg/etc to 3GP. It works very well for most formats with minimal video/audio sync loss. Quicktime Professional will also convert to 3GP.

    Sharon:
The samsung a920 cell phone has a display resolution of 176x220. I usually resize my pictures that I want to put on the phone to this size and they generally turn out great.

I am always searching for new info on this phone and came across this site. It has been very helpful. I came across some information on one of my searches regarding using the A920 as a modem through Bluetooth. According to the post I found it can and has been done. Here is the post I found from a guy named Bob:

"Hello Friends, this is my first post here. I found this site this past week because of some technical difficulties with Sprint PCS. I'm grateful for the discovery! This is a great place, and I plan to visit often.

This post is an attempt to not squander the mental and emotional anguish I endured this past week in an effort to use my new Samsung a920 as a modem. I am now elated, as I am successfully using this new phone as a high-speed modem via the wireless Bluetooth connection. I had not intended to use the Bluetooth; rather, I was planning to use the included data cable and the Sprint Connection Manager software. However, this was not meant to be.

I spent about 20 hours (honestly!) over a course of 4 days trying to get the phone to work as a modem with my new Toshiba laptop using the cable and the Connection Manager software. I was on with Customer Care for a total of about 8 hours and I have the records to prove it! Is there a medal for that? Anyhow, I don't want to waste the knowledge I've gained THE HARD WAY. May you benefit from my long, arduous journey.

After wearing out "advance tech" guy after "advance tech" guy, I finally found one that threw up his arms in despair after repeated efforts to use the cable and Sprint software and said, "Let's try Bluetooth." Well, I tried it. And it was pretty easy. It worked great! I couldn't believe it. It's better than connecting through the cable because there's no wires! Duh.

Here's the process for setting up the Samsung a920 as a modem via Bluetooth.

    BEGIN: 5 "Make Sures. . ."
    1. Make sure you have a "phone-as-modem" package.
    2. Make sure you have Power Vision enabled.
    3. Make sure you are running Windows XP (Pro or Home).
    4. Make sure you have Bluetooth on your laptop turned "on" and that it is ready.
    5. Make sure you know your Sprint Vision username and password. Your username for this connection will be your username with the addition of ".modem" after the asterisk. For example, if your regular username is visioneer@sprintpcs.com, your username for this modem connection will be visioneer@modem.sprintpcs.com.

DISCOVERING YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD IF YOU DON'T KNOW THEM:
The best thing to do is call Customer Care and say "Vision" and then say "Services." You'll be put in touch with someone that can tell them to you in about 15-20 minutes. It's worth it.

Here's the second easiest way I know to discover your Sprint Vision username (and not your password, unfortunately)

Take your phone. Hit "end" a few times until you get to the main screen.
    1. hit: ##3282# (that ##DATA#)
    2. this will take you to "3G Data Prog"
    3. Select "1. Username"
    4. Select "1. View"
    5. Select "1. User NAI" -- this will bring up a small dialog box that has your username 3G (Vision) username in it. Write it down, hit "ok," and look again at step #5 under "BEGIN" (above). Now you know your 3G modem username.
SPECIAL PASSWORD NOTE: You actually CAN find your password if you know your phone's unlock code. After step 3 above, instead of selecting "View" select "Edit." The phone will prompt you for the unlock code. Enter it. It will then take you to a screen where you can find your password among one of the selections. I forget exactly where, but you'll be able to find it with a little effort. Just don't press the "back" button after you click "ok." Only use "ok" when you're tooling around under that particular "edit" menu.

    CONTINUING RIGHT ALONG:
    ON THE PHONE. . .
Go to your phone menu and click on "Settings." Then go down to "BLUETOOTH" (it's #0 and at the bottom on my phone). Make sure it is "Enabled" under #1. Make sure it is "Always Visible" under #2. That's all you need to do there. Click back or hit end.

    ON THE COMPUTER. . .
Now, go to your computer and click on the "Bluetooth Settings." If you don't know where to find it, you should look for a little blue antenna icon in the system tray and right click on it. It should bring up a menu and one of the selections is "Bluetooth Settings." Click it.

When the Bluetooth Settings screen comes up, click on "Bluetooth" at the top, and then select "Add New Connection" on the drop down menu. You're almost there!

Your computer will search and find "SPH-a920." This is good. It will then ask you to fill in some important fields. Here's what you must, and I repeat, MUST put in with detailed precision:

    Phone Number: #777
    Username: xxxxxxxxxxx@modem.sprintpcs.com
    Password: xxxxxx
    Password: xxxxxx
Keep hitting "next" until you're done. Follow any computer prompt instructions until "Finish."

BACK ON THE PHONE. . .
You must do this part now. . . go back to your phone to the menu and select "tools." Under "tools" select option #3 which is "Bluetooth." Click it and it will bring up a screen that says: "Trusted Devices." This is where the final "pairing" between your phone and your computer will take place. It should recognize your laptop. Highlight it and then select "Connect." If it prompts you for a connection code it is either "0000" or "1234".

NOTE: If you get any prompts either on the phone or on the computer for a 4 digit passcode, it is either 0000 or 1234. Try both. One will work.

Once the pairing is successful, go back to your Bluetooth Settings on your computer. You should have an icon for your phone now. Click it to make the final connection.

This is the beautiful part. There's nothing left to do, and the phone recognizes that you want to use it as a data modem. Once it connects, you're ready to surf and e-mail, as long as you are in a Vision or Power Vision geographic area! Since the pairing is set up between your phone and laptop, all you have to do in the future is open your "Bluetooth Settings" and double-click on your phone icon.

ONE TIP: This will show up as a dial-up connection under "Network Connections." To go there, select "My Network Places" and then find the "View Network Connections" at the left of the screen. The name of the connection will be SPH-a920 (unless you changed it). Right click on the connection and select "Properties." Under properties, select the general tab and click "configure." Once there, set your speed to the highest possible connection speed.

I hope this helps you! If I've said anything wrong above, please put it right!

    Sincerely,

    Bob Roberts

has anyone figured out how to edit the voicemail number stored in the number 1 position on the A920? I'm trying to add pauses and enter my password so that it automatically kicks into my messages when I hold down the 1 key. I know I can always create another speed dial location but I'm curious to know if I can actually edit the one that was preprogrammed under the 1 key.

  • Barry Gervin June 14, 2006 1:34 PM

    John;

I haven't been able to locate the adapter either so if you have any luck please let me know.

Regarding Bluetooth and listening to MP3 music are you saying that you cannot listen to music with a pair of wireless Bluetooth headsets which I have seen advertised by Jabra and Plantronics. The Jabra web site says that for their model to work , the phone needs to support the following profiles:

A2DP for advanced audio (stereo), AVRCP for remote control and Bluetooth headset and hands-free profiles.

I guess this means that the A920 doesn't ? I agree this is quite disappointing.

    Hello Everyone,

I've been following this site for a while now and have gotten most of my questions answered, so for those that have in depth knowledge of this phone, I thank you for your time and responses.

My question is regarding the battery. I know in the manual it advertises the battery should have approximately 220 hours of standby time. Has anyone actually had close to that amount? I seem to be lucky if my battery makes it to the 72 hour mark.

Now I know that if you listen to mp3's or watch videos or use the mobile browser it will make a difference and drain the battery faster. But I've found that after making 2 calls for a total of 2 1/2 minutes, and not using the phone for anything else, it barely lasted 72 hours.

Anyone able to shed some light on the battery life for me?

Thanks again for your continued help!

  • Barry Gervin June 16, 2006 12:38 PM

    John,

I've been impressed with your success is getting A920 recognized by Bitpim. I tried the supplied cable and several sets of drivers but nothing seems to work - Bitpim doesn't see the phone. Could you specifically point to the drivers you used or, if there site is gone, e-mail them to me? Thanks a lot,

    Greg

  • Barry Gervin June 22, 2006 9:12 AM

John, I couldn't get bitpim to recognize the a920 either. I need the drivers as well.

    Rich

  • Barry Gervin June 22, 2006 9:26 AM

I am a bit discouraged to find out that after all this time, no one has posted a message which clearly indicates where software and drivers can be found to synchronize contacts on the a920 for free. I think we have paid enough for the phone to be able to sync contacts without forking out more money.

I putwhen ever i try to transfer the music to the card through the memory card reader it sais the music is right protected..but when i go to the properties of the song it sis it is not protected :s is there naything i can do to transfer this music or stop the write protection from geting in my way of transfering some tunes?

  • Barry Gervin June 23, 2006 1:52 AM

Sprint could easily come out with a way to make a connection to the PC with the USB cable for other reasons than the modem... The only reason they havn't is beacause they want you to spend extra money to get online and buy thier music. It's all just a big rip off!

  • Barry Gervin June 23, 2006 12:22 PM

I just want to point out again that the only way to get MP3's on the phone is to transfer media via the the USB flash adapter ... unfortunatly yes they had to Sucker us to get even more money. a 20-30$ buy from the cell phone dealer.. also as to the write protection is it possible that your downloads are non transferable <kevin> ? If you try ripping a CD and seeing if you can transfer then? . I have to say I love this phone and the features are numerous to say the least But all remember that its not sprint or bell that are to blame for the usb cable it is samsungs phone.

  • Barry Gervin June 23, 2006 12:55 PM

When I send a picture or video and click the "send" button, the screen shows "your message is being sent" and hangs up there, there is no status bar to show when or if the picture/video actually sends. Most of the time they do send but it would be nice to have the status bar that shows the progress. Every other phone I have had in the past has had a status bar and has showed when the transfer is complete.

Is this a setting I am missing or is there really no status bar?

  • Barry Gervin June 26, 2006 9:46 PM

I was hoping someone would help me out... I'm not very good with computers and i want to upload some songs from my computer to my phone... I just bought this phone this past wkend and there are no instructions on how to upload songs from ur computer to ur phone. I am hoping that someone can help me out (in simple terms) that would be greatly appreciated...

No luck on getting the bluetooth to work with the media player. Regular phone calls work great, especially with the voice dialing features, but not the media player. I play music with the media player and the sound ONLY comes out the side speakers, unless I plug in a wired headset.

    Greg & Rich
I have no idea where I got the drivers from. I think I also failed to mention that it was a specific version of bitpim that I used, which was difficult to find and again I happened across it by chance. Bitpim is version 0.8.08-official. The drivers were called Samsung MCCI V4.24 WHQL Certified.

Again, I wasn't able to do a lot with bitpim, but I WAS able to read and save the files from the phone onto the pc.

I haven't played with it in quite a while so I'm not sure if there's a newer version of bitpim out that directly supports the phone or not.
Realize this is a Bell Mobility Canada cell phone. I don't know if any of this works on another provider's phone.

    I hope that helps.

    kevin
This may be a stupid question, but did you check to make sure the lock slider on the left side of the transflash adapter is set to unlock? The lock position is like write-protecting a floppy disk. It works the same way.

    chuck v
From what I can tell, the a920 cell phone has an "always connected" feel to it pertaining to the data transfers, such as picture sharing, meaning it does most of its connectivity in the background, leaving you free to do whatever with the phone while it silently does it's thing. I know once I've finished playing with the browser feature and don't plan on sending any more pictures that way I'll be cancelling my 1x browser feature and tell my provider to block all internet access from my phone. I just don't trust the phone enough to not be connecting without my knowledge. There doesn't seem to be any way to block that access from within the phone, at least none that I've found yet.

    Kathy
The only way to successfully upload songs is to use a card reader, at least with the Bell Mobility Canada A920 cell phone.
Take the memory card out of your cell phone and plug it into your computer. Your computer needs to have a way to read the card. Some people have purchased usb flash card readers that allow the tiny transflash memory cards to plug into them, while others use the adapter that comes with the phone which turns the transflash card into a standard secure digital card, which you then plug into a flash memory card slot on your computer. If your computer doesn't have one, check your printer. A lot of the newer photo printers have them.
If you can't find one you'll need to buy one.

Once you can plug the memory card into the computer it will work just like a floppy disk and will have a new Removable Media drive letter (mine is G:) listed under "My Computer" like your C: drive or your CD-Rom. Then you copy your songs to the /media folder of the memory card. If you don't have a /media folder on the card, make one and put your songs into it. Then use the phone's media player to play them.

    Hope that helps everyone. =)

  • Barry Gervin June 27, 2006 8:49 PM

Hey Kevin, i had the same frustrating problem with the card. For some reason if you put a piece of tape over the lock on the sd card it will work. I have know idea why this works or why why sandisk has to screw with us like that but thats the deal.

  • Barry Gervin June 28, 2006 12:28 AM

Heres the link for BITPIM 0.8.08:

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/bitpim/bitpim-0.8.08-setup.exe?download

Still didnt detect the phone for me....

However if you go to settings and security and enter your 4 digit password and then enter '0' at the menu, you get Port mapping...I set everything to USB and new things started happening...

thanks for replying back to my message so soon John. I tried what u had recommended but unfortunatly this did not work... I was wondering if there is anything that i might be doing wrong.... Can anyone help me place song form my pc to my phone????? Thanks

  • Barry Gervin July 6, 2006 8:51 AM

Kathy, are you getting an error message? It's really very easy... also, make sure you're using the phone's media player, not the one that signs you onto the online store. The online store one doesn't look for your music. The one you want is called Media Player. Then choose option 2.Memory Card and you should see your songs listed, provided they've been copied into the /media folder of the transflash card.

One question I didn't ask is what version of Windows you're using. Is it Windows XP? Windows 98? Windows 2000? This could be the problem if you're using an older windows. Your windows might not see the memory card.

I'll run through it once more.
Put your transflash card (the one inside the phone) into the adapter that makes it SD size (like what digital cameras use). Plug that into the SD card reader on your computer.
On most Windows XP computers the little popup should come up now asking you what you want to do. Click on the Open to View option. This will open your media card so you can see it.
Now make a Media folder - to do that, right click on a blank spot on the window that opened and left click on New, and then left click on Folder. Type in Media and hit enter. Now doubleclick on the Media folder and you'll be exactly where you need to put your music. Make sure they're .mp3's, not .wma's as the phone doesn't read .wma files.
If you now open a new window and go to where your music is you can copy/paste or drag'n'drop to the media folder.
Once you have your music copied over, take it out of the computer and out of the sd adapter and pop it back into the phone.
Open the Media Player and your music should be there.

    Good luck. =)

  • Barry Gervin July 8, 2006 11:26 PM

I have FINALLY come to figure out how to transfer my music....mind you I only got the phone yesterday. However, I went and bought a bigger MB card today and tried to rip music off my CDs thru Windows Media Player. Struggled with WHY my phone wasn't recognizing the files on the new card but would on the old card...course, til I came allllllll the way to the bottom of the page and saw John's message (thank you John). I now see my files on the new card are WMA. My Q is tho, is there any way I can format them into MP3's?? Aside from using a different ripping/burning program??

  • Barry Gervin July 12, 2006 9:44 AM

John, thanks for the link. I have downloaded bitpim and also the newest version of bitpim, unfortunately no luck.

I have tried to google the driver description you provided without luck.

Do you know if the a920 is compatible with the driver of any other phone?

  • Barry Gervin July 12, 2006 9:45 AM

Kathy, could you keep me posted on your progress and I will do the same.

    Good luck.

  • Barry Gervin July 13, 2006 8:29 AM

    Sica
Yes, there are wma to mp3 convertor programs available, but it's not recommended as you're converting a lossy format to another lossy format. (Lossy means to compress the song it takes parts of the song out to make it smaller - which means you're taking out twice as much of the song to make it even smaller)
Your best bet is to rip the music using an mp3 ripper. That'll retain the best quality and still allow you to play your music on the phone.

Does someone have some webspace I can upload the A920 driver I'm using to? Let me know. Maybe we can finally get it out there and widely available.

  • Barry Gervin July 13, 2006 11:49 AM

    John,

If you email me the driver, I'll put it up on my blog.

    Thanks

I know there is definitely some animosity here against Bell Mobility, and I (as a new owner of this phone) share a great deal of it. Here are some things that I have found that work.

1- www.futuredial.com snapsyncII software works well for syncing the contact list to and from pc and phone. It was $29.99 for the downloaded version, if you wanted the CD version it was an extra $5. It worked with the stock USB cable, just select Samsung SPH-a920 (Sprint PCS) in the model selection at the beginning of each session. It uploaded multiple numbers and email addresses per contact.

2- I picked up a Sandisk 128Mb SD card for my digital camera a while ago and it came with an SD reader, total cost was around $20 at Wal-Mart and it works great for transferring mp3 to the phone. I have just ordered a 1Gb t-flash card from TigerDirect and am really looking forward to the expanded memory.

I do want to respond to some of the negative comments made about Bell though. Bell, as a whole, is very competitive in all of the markets in which it does business. If you look around with different providers you will see that the prices are all within roughly the same range for similar features, but each provider has focussed on different Value Added Services (VAS) to increase profits. Bell's grip on connectivity is a tight one, but you will find each provider will exploit a different VAS in the same way: Text Messaging, WAP, etc. Others will use abnormally high penalties for contract termination (ETP).
As for the the complaints of a lack of knowledge from the Bell World reps, keep in mind that these people are hired for sales ability, they are not technicians or engineers, the level of training provided by manufacturers for each new phone released is minimal, enough information to make a sale, and that is it. The same goes for Bell Mobility reps, both in the call centres and in the Bell Mobility retail locations.
Speaking as a customer, not as an employee right now, the fact that Bell has the largest and most reliable digital coverage area in Canada(proven in many market studies) makes up for the minor inconveniences expressed in many of the previous posts.

    Clint

I've had no problem with my 1GB TF card from ebay.. just get an auction that includes the card reader!

Type one of these into the ebay search:
    transflash +R1
    transflash +R2

The come with the 1GB Sandisk card and a reader for the same prices as the card alone! I bought the +R2 one, it has a built-in TF slot, no need for SD adapters! The other one can be more suited to look like a USB key with the SD adapter slotted inside.

Don't worry about the $25 shipping charge.. yeah, it's crazy, but it's done with every TF card, and it still averages out to around $52 in total, shipping, reader, 1GB card and another SD adapter included.

I have over 170 songs on the card, plenty of music for anyone.. plus, plenty of space for shifting videos/pics to the card for saving.

One thing I don't get, though, holding down the play button on the outside while the phone is closed and at rest launches the music store (overpriced piece of crap)..?!?!? I then have to open it to use it! Why couldn't they just have it open up the media folder and get right to the MP3's like a proper player?

The Music Store also has a media area for their downloads.. what happens if you buy songs and want to listen to them along with your regular ones? I guess they don't count on you buying much from them..

I just picked up this phone couple days ago and I still can't figure out how to transfer my mp3 to the phone using the usb cable, the salesman at Bell said it was possible, little help?

  • Barry Gervin July 24, 2006 1:27 PM

has anyone been successful in finding an adapter for the A920 that would allow you to use a regular set of headphones (with a 3.5 mm jack) to listen to the MP3 player instead of the earbuds that come with the phone that are not that great and keep falling off ?. I've tried several adapters that are available commercially at Radio Shack and on e Bay that adapts a 3.5 mm jack to a 2.5 mm jack but when I try this, I only get sound out of one speaker. Someone has said earlier (see John above) that I need a special adapter with a 4 connector tip? If so no one seems to have it including Samsung.

    Help!!

  • Barry Gervin July 24, 2006 6:17 PM

IS there anyway to change how much time u have to record a video? 30 seconds does not seem enough. I know some phones are able to have unlimited recording. Any help would be great!

  • Barry Gervin July 24, 2006 6:39 PM

    I believe this will work:
    http://tinyurl.com/z8uvu

Has anyone tried it? Or this one, which includes a microphone:
    http://tinyurl.com/eu5y3

  • Barry Gervin July 25, 2006 2:09 PM

Its my understanding that the adapter needs to be phone specific as I have already tried a number of different ones made for other phones. Samsung doesn't seem to make one and I haven't found one available anywhere. Still waiting to hear if someone actually has found an adapter that works with the A920.

  • Barry Gervin July 27, 2006 10:38 AM

Dont use MP3 format for your music on the transflash. Convert your music to these settings and youll get 10X more music on your card. " Easy CD-DA Extractor " works good for conversions.

    MP4 AAC+
    32 Kbit/s
    44100Hz stereo

  • Barry Gervin July 27, 2006 10:39 AM

Oh... 1Gb Transflash cards work great in the 920.

  • Barry Gervin July 27, 2006 10:43 AM

I have a stereo headphone adapter that works great also... I bought it on ebay for $5 USD. Any 2.5mm to 3.5mm converter will work AS LONG AS it has 3 black bands instead of 2, on the 2.5 end.

  • Barry Gervin July 27, 2006 1:53 PM

I have run into problems with the picture mail function on the A920 - when I go to send it immediately prompts me for a password. I enter a password and the prompt goes away, however; it comes back in a few seconds. I have been looking for a firmware upgrade, perhaps thinking it was that - any suggestions?

  • Barry Gervin July 29, 2006 8:47 AM

    Jenn:
You need to contact your service provider. It's an issue with your password and their end. You may have been locked out by putting the wrong password in several times. I encountered this when I upgraded my cell phone. A quick call to my provider (Bell) solved the problem.

  • Barry Gervin August 1, 2006 8:52 AM

This is for JSMZ. I haven't had any luck locating the 4 connector adapter on ebay . Would you mind telling me who the seller was so i can order one as well?

  • Barry Gervin August 2, 2006 12:25 AM

Using the above prescribed method to set the ports to USB connects my phone to my computer instantly, every time. It even states right on the phone that it is connected.

Steve above wrote, "However if you go to settings and security and enter your 4 digit password and then enter '0' at the menu, you get Port mapping...I set everything to USB and new things started happening... ". The only thing to add is you have to do this if the "Connected to Computer" on the screen is not there to reconnect.

Lastly, The program BITPIM 0.8.08: and the newer version do not support this phone. That's the next thing to attack. Ben

  • Barry Gervin August 2, 2006 12:52 PM

Has anyone had any luck getting their calender from outlook to upload to the phone?

I have suceeded in uploading contacts via bluetooth but have had no luck with my schedule.

    You wrote;

Based on that I purchased the software. Not only will it NOT work, but FutureDial will not respond to help questions by e-mail (this is how they suggest you contact them). I was on hold for an hour and gave up.

So now, based on your suggestion, I have a $29.99 downloaded software that won't work.

No, I really don't blame you, just the company you work for. In the next post I will detail the problem for anyone who might see the solution. Thanks

  • Barry Gervin August 2, 2006 8:35 PM

I purchased your product yesterday but it simply will not work.

    Bob
    Order number: 0******
    Serial Number: ****-****-****-****
    Phone: Samsung SPH-A920
    Carrier: Sprint
    Computer: PC
    Operating System: Windows XP

I followed directions carefully on installation. It said, 'Do NOT plug in USB cable until told to do so'. BUT, it never told me to do so. I loaded two programs, the USB phone cable drivers and SnapSyncII Software Program.

When I open the program, on the very top thick blue line it says, "SnapSync II - Samsung A920 (Sprint PCS)

When I try to import contacts from phone it says, "The application was unable to detect contacts. Would you like to pick the compost manually?"

I respond yes. It then says it cannot detect the phone but gives me the option to change ports. The default port was com1

The only other choice is Com3: Lucent Win Modem. I select this and click "OK". It says it IS reading from the phone contact list.

Then it says, "The application was unable to read contacts from phone. Restart the phone and try again.

I hope this is enough information for you.

    Thank you, Bob

Do 2GB micro-flash cards actuially exist ion the market ? I haven't seen any for sale.

  • Barry Gervin August 3, 2006 11:01 AM

It is all over EBAY. They run from $98 to $120 plus shipping usd.

  • Barry Gervin August 3, 2006 9:04 PM

Bob....forget SnapSync.....I use Datapilot...it's fast, and works flawlessly

  • Barry Gervin August 4, 2006 10:08 AM

It's quite depressing to find that no one has been able to post clear information regarding free drivers and basic software (not pay) to transfer a couple contacts on the phone. I could easily pay for the SnapSync, but it just doesn't feel right doing so for a piece of hardware you bought that costs as much as a pocketpc. Can you imagine if they did that? I swear these cell providers and manufacturers hide behind the retailers and are like ghosts when you have any questions or problems with their service that requires timely accurate responses.

  • Barry Gervin August 4, 2006 10:35 AM

Anyone know how to upload midlet applications on the phone?

As poster mentioned back in May tons of free applications are available on the midlet site, but I need to know where to place them so that the phone is capable of reading them.

  • Barry Gervin August 9, 2006 10:11 AM

I see now on E-Bay, that there are GB Micro cards available. Has anyone tried this with their Samsung SPH-a920? Is is compatiable?

    ZOOKA:
PLEASE GIVE MORE INFO ON DATAPILOT SO WE CAN ALL SOLVE THIS ISSUE ONCE AND FOR ALL.

Are you saying that IT IS possible to connect the phone to our PC via USB cable and transfer files (phone contacts, schedule, etc) back and forth? Everyone here seems to think what you are saying is impossible and that the USB is only for modem use.

    PLEASE GET BACK RIGHT AWAY.
    THANK YOU.

  • Barry Gervin August 10, 2006 7:02 PM

    Johnny_C:

If you have read this from top to bottom you will have see before now that you can transfert contact to/from your PC... Seems like you are to leazy to do so. I'll let you find a solution by taking few minutes in your life to read past comment and not have the answer right away.

BTW CAPS letters mean you are yelling... so rude of you for the people that are here to help

  • Barry Gervin August 11, 2006 12:20 AM

My aren't we demanding. Well, you did say Please & Thank-you (albeit in caps) so here's the skinny on Datapilot. It's a great program for transferring contacts to/from your pc/phone using the USB cable that came with the A920.....but that's about all it'll do for you. Datapilot has many other features like Calendar, SMS, image editing, ringtone composing etc., but our friends at Bell have decided not to enable those.

I have a ton of contacts that need to be updated frequently, so the $40 pricetag was worth it for me, but if you only have a few, it may not be worth the investment. Not sure if there's a trial version you can d/load to try before you buy, but your only other alternative (short of Limewire - legal/moral issues aside) is transferring contacts one at a time. Hope that helps.

  • Barry Gervin August 11, 2006 10:22 AM

Hey guys thx for all the info regarding the A920. But i am still having a problem finding a driver for me phone? Its with Bell and i'm from Toronto and have been looking everywhere for this driver for my cable usb. If anyone has the driver please email it to me please thx
    brianmiranda@hotmail.com

once again thx for all the info

  • Barry Gervin August 14, 2006 9:34 AM

Good luck Brian, I have been asking for the same thing for months now.

  • Barry Gervin August 14, 2006 3:49 PM

    John:
I WAS NOT COMMUNICATING TO YOU! AND INSTEAD OF BEING HELPFUL BY GIVING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM, YOU TELL ME THAT I'M LAZY. I'VE READ EVERY POST, AND NO ONE BESIDES ZOOKA HAS BEEN ABLE TO MAKE THIS WORK.

    Zooka:
thank you for the info. If you do find a way to find this freeware, please do let us know.

  • Barry Gervin August 15, 2006 3:26 PM

I have had my phone for a couple months now. But the cost to get a SD card reader is only $7 dollars at office depot. A lot cheaper than some other places. There is no way you should be paying more that that.

  • Barry Gervin August 16, 2006 5:37 PM

Johnny_C......Datapilot isn't freeware, unless you can find it at the usual places where people 'borrow' software. You'll have to find the latest version (ver.3.17) for the A920 to work - that's the version my officially purchased one is...don't think earlier versions work with the A920.

Rich, Brian.....try the Datapilot support website link below for drivers (Samsung USB cable)It says for Sprint, Verizon and Alltel, but should work for Bell too. Good luck

  • Barry Gervin August 16, 2006 8:56 PM

    Johnny_C,

I personnaly use the SnpSync program, after few word with my Bell Mobility salesman he give me a copy. It's not a great program (not flashy at all) but it does the job to transfer my 325 contact to/fom phone/PC. For the datapilot I did not test it but reports say it's work... Unless you have some time on your hand to harase a salesman at Bell I don't see how you could have the program for free.

BTW must say that as per John message this have been address in previous post... See exchange between John (the same one??) & Mike between 4/3/2006 & 4/8/2006 earlier this page. For your defence must say that this is coming a long post now and not always easy to read.

FYI I use my PC build in card reader to transfert picture & music via the card adapter that came with the phone... Doesn't seem to work with the USB cable (at least with Snap Sync)

    Marc

P.S. Sorry my english is not that good but it's my 3rd language.

  • Barry Gervin August 17, 2006 10:23 PM

i just bought the a 920 and i need software to hook up to the computer where do i get it?

  • Barry Gervin August 18, 2006 8:32 PM

To the people wondering how to zoom with the camera. You must set your resolution to low to get the full x5 zoom but once zoomed all the way, the pictures start to look blocky and ugly. To get to the options, go into the camera mode and press options and then settings and then resolution. The picture when not zoomed at all seems to be the same as if my resolution was on 1.3 megapixels so i just left it on low res. hope this helps.

  • Barry Gervin August 20, 2006 11:58 PM

Wow, with the flurry of comments over the a920, would it almost be better to consider a RAZR V3? I'm on OS X 10.4 and would like to go the route with least pain for exchanging data...

  • Barry Gervin August 24, 2006 8:25 PM

    Here's the Susteen release.

  • Barry Gervin August 25, 2006 4:06 PM

I wanted to try using the samsung a920 as a modem, so that I did. Little did I know, they charge you 15$/1mb. It's ridiculous, it was hooked for less than 30 minutes, I end up with a 2800$ bill. Are you serious? Do they really expect me to pay that much?

  • Barry Gervin August 29, 2006 10:43 AM

I see there are two John's posting here. Me, and the not-so-nice John. =)

    Chris Acerak:
The razr software that is mostly readily available, however spendy, does work far better than any software available for the a920. But from what I've seen, the camera quality isn't as good as the a920, nor is there any capability to change your memory size (ie: no flashcard) with the bell version of the razr.
I also find the razr's shell to be somewhat worrysome. Everytime you drop it your risks to break it are far greater than that of the sturdy-shelled a920.

And for everyone else that doubts me:
As I stated, bimpim DOES work, but it was cumbersome, and didn't DIRECTLY support it. All I could use was the fileviewer part of bimpim. Bitpim doesn't automatically find the phone. You have to be smart enough to tell bitpim where to find the phone, meaning what port it's sitting on. So you need to be somewhat computer savvy in order to know how to find out what com port your phone is connected to. The drivers create a virtual communications port that bitpim uses to talk to the phone. It also works with the cable that was supplied with the phone. All I could do was copy files directly off of the phone's internal file system. It's extremely cryptic in there. Things aren't exactly labelled "contact list", or "my favourite game".
I used it simply to copy my games from the phone to my pc so that I had a backup of them.
And for that purpose it worked well enough.
I didn't have to change any of the field settings that people are reffering to, but that doesn't mean that my phone wasn't already set to something that's needed whereas other's may not. *shrug*
Good luck for those who are still trying to get it to work.

  • Barry Gervin September 2, 2006 9:24 AM

I got the a920 a few weeks ago now, and there's one thing I'm wondering about it...or if it's just my phone that's doing it.

When the phone is open, is the external LCD supposed to show an image or clock or anything? Because mine just always stays black. And then when making calls, every other samsung I've seen is a white screen with the call duration ticking away. The external LCD is still constantly black on mine. The only time it shows anything is if the phone is closed.

Is everyone else's like this, or do I need to see about getting mine fixed?

  • Barry Gervin September 5, 2006 3:54 AM

Thank you so much for saving me so many wasted hours of messing around trying to figure this phone out on my own!!!
I am really excited as I got it today (been eyeing it for 2weeks now) I like all the features kinda worried about the few drawbacks/glitches though hopefully you guys will be able to help though going to buy my 2gb and reader this weekend.....

  • Barry Gervin October 3, 2006 1:39 PM

I have a dial-up internet service from Sympatico (I think, a subsidiary or division of Bell Canada). If I connect my Samsung A920 to my notebook via provided USB cable and then setup the notebook to dial & connect to a Sympatico Web Server using the A920 as my phoneline/modem, will I be charge the data rate (for connecting/downloading)or Web connection rate for my cellular service.

I am pretty sure, it will cost me some airtime but I use the phone very seldom.

There was a similar question regarding internet connection but I think the other fellow is using unlimited mobile internet/web. I am using a dial-up internet connection.

Also, I do have a card reader/programmer that came with my Garmin StreetPilot GPS - will that work to transfer files to/from PC and A920? I am not sure if it the transflash card adaptor will fit in.

Check out Samsung's FAQ on this phone for further questions.

After 5 days of arguing with bell over the stripped funtionality of the bluetooth and changes in the menu that take out options for bluetooth security and disbling internet usage of the phone. Bell is now sending me a treo 650 for free and refunding me for the Samsung a920.

Don't get me wrong I like the a920 but bell screwwed up. At least with the treo i can add the functionality I need with 3rd party software, and take advantage of my roommate being a software programmer and all the handy utilities he's made to bypass bell's restrictions for his treo 600.

Just be persistent with them. For me it took 5 days and eventual contact at the executive level.

raymond.turner@gmail.com if you want more details on this.

One last note, Anyone want to buy a 1gig transflash card that works with the a920? If so I have one up for sale.

Has anyone seen or tried the NEW LIMITED EDITION A920? (the silver and white one)

The following is written on the Bell website:

"*The Samsung a920 supports a wireless headset (mono) and hands-free Bluetooth profiles. It also supports v-card transfers to other compatible devices via Object Exchange (OBEX)."

    .........

My question is, what exactly does that mean??? Is the new limited edition version capable of BLUETOOTH FILE TRANSFERS???

    What's OBEX?

And... If the new version's bluetooth isnt "crippled" and allows users to perform file transfers to and from other people's phones via bluetooth... WHAT CAN WE (everyone who purchased the original A920) DO ABOUT THIS? (since our version doesn't allow this) Is there a way to unlock/un-cripple the bluetooth? Do we complain to bell and receive the new version? (..ha)

AND ALSO, the limited edition version COMES WITH THE 1GB memory card, unlike our measily 32MB joke of a card.. this is BULLS**T!!!!

  • Barry Gervin December 12, 2006 10:18 AM

actually what u are saying is true. i was offered to buy that one instead the original one from bell. but i didn't cuz its too expensive. as far as wat ur saying it is true. i can transfer files and i does have a 1 gb mem card. now u can't change the original one to transfer files like that but u can buy the 1 gb card that comes from around $50-80 CDN. now as for my question two messages above? noone knows?

  • Barry Gervin December 14, 2006 12:52 AM

  • Noel December 18, 2006 6:27 PM

    Hey guys,

OK, first my two cents -- I love this phone! Love the sound, and it's a lot of fun to hack around with it, especially uploading new applications.

First thing: I have yet to meet anyone personally who is able to transfer mp3s using the data cable. It seems like a gross oversight on Samsung's part, but as everyone has mentioned, a $20 flash card drive won't kill ya ;) .

Not even Bell's incompetence and greed can kill my vibe with this phone ($3 a song through the Music Store WTH?!?) But a few noteworthy things: it plays Windows Media files beautifully (I first tested it by downloading "Wheels of Steel" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five ;) ). Besides the exorbitant Music Store prices, I'm not feeling the fact that there songs are .KOZ files and won't play easily on my PC (or even on my website, where you can actually upload video/audio to it a la MySpace or YouTube.) If ANYONE knows any tricks to convert the .KOZ format to something more PC-friendly, I'm all ears!

If you want some free applications to soup up what it can do, I suggest www.getjar.com. This includes the MyWaves application (www.mywaves.com), which allows you to get all your streaming video, etc. They also have some pretty nifty GPS-focused applications, arcade-quality games, free chat and IM, etc. (just make sure you get the Internety bundle from Bell!)

If anyone also knows of how to increase the camcorder time to over 30 sec., again, you've got my attention. It would be nice to hear more peoples' experience using the 1G or 2G card, and whatever new things it can allow you to do.

I haven't had any real issues with the flash card port or headset, and I like a lot of you have had my phone for about a year.

Anyway, I'll tune in here for my developments or news. Peace out!

Does anyone knows for sure that a 2gb card would work on this phone?

    Thanks!

  • a920 sucks!! January 5, 2007 8:34 PM

If my wife didn't buy this phone for xmas, I would take it back. The price for this phone is rediculous, Pay an X amount of dollars, then they want you to only download there songs, and go out and buy another bigger card too hold info that you want, and a data cable that doesn't do anything that you want and that goes for BT I know you can go to other sites but how many pple do that. If I knew she was going to do this I would bought one on ebay (UNLOCKED of course). Ya this phone was bought in full.

I got the 920 recently and it works great.  Got some simple software and am able to use the USB cable to DL anything to my 1 GB Memory card or games/apps to the phone.

Scotty, what software are you using?

  • Cheryl January 22, 2007 10:26 PM

I've had the a920 for a couple months now and had similar problems as of late with the drivers.  I finally downloaded them but it won't work with my cable internet.  Is there anyway to make this work?  I'm hoping to transfer a ringtone that I made in mp3 format to my computer with the adapter cable.

This phone is fully functional and accessible just like any other phone out there. Yes, it is much harder to find the software you need (motorola's are the real tweakers phones) but, if anything, its way easier to access a samsung when you have the software.

I'll be back later today to give you guys the info.

Alright, I'm going to upload some files to my site for everyone who needs them. The drivers from Samsung/Sprint will be included.

I'm not going to be descriptive about the process because I can't remember the exact directions (most likely, if you search google for the files in the link I will give, you will find the FAQ).

I can tell you that you install the drivers, run Unicdma to get the number to access your phone (6 digits I think) and then QPST is your filemanager. So, like I said, search google and you will likely find the forum where the FAQ I used to do this is posted.

JadMaker is basically to upload games to your phone though you don't even need that to do it.

First of all i will like to tanks everyone for there time, i realy appreciate that.

Also for those who have answer the same question over and over.

And a special thank to john for is link :)

Don't format your flash card with the phone, i do so (i have a 1gb card) and after that the phone detect it like a 128mb card. If you do so, don't panic, you have just to use windows to format it, and everything will return to normal.

Please forgive me for my english, i am a french canadian.
