Reading Adobe Illustrator files with Acrobat Reader

Occassionaly I need to view an adobe illustrator file. I usually end up asking our graphics guy to create a PDF or jpeg. Sometimes I search for some freeware tool to convert or display, usually without much success.

Today I thought I'd try using the new Adobe Reader 7.0 to see by chance if they support that. I was surprised to find out they do! Not only does it work in 7.0 as well, but it also works in 6.0, I just never thought to try.

It's not an associated file type, but you can do a File/Open, or select Open With Adobe Reader to view the file.

    Thank you!

    This was very helpful.
I can now review AIs from the designers without having to load (and licence) the full program..

I used 6.0 and it worked like a charm

I downloaded reader 7.0 but could not view adobe illustrator files. Does it matter if they come from a pc or a mac?

    Thanks

i believe that it depends on whether or not when the file is saved if the "pdf compatible" option is checked.

Problem with encoding if file is emailed. Acrobat 7 gives message that file is dammaged when I try to open AI file if file was emailed.
Do others have this problem or is my source sending a bad file?

Hi. I seem to have the same problem as John did. Adobe Reader 7.0 is NOT opening .ai files we received via email. I'm not sure about other .ai or .eps files. I'd appreciate any feedback via email.

Opening .ai files in Adobe Reader 7.0 works. But, not all .ai files, some with the same problems as John and Raphael.

Anyway, it is fine to be the alternative to handle the .ai files.
